A pencil marking corrections on a printed page

Policy

Editorial policy

How products are selected, how corrections work, how often pages are reviewed, and the specific claims this site will never make.

The short version

Products are selected on published specifications and our own arithmetic. Commission never affects a ranking. Every pick carries an explicit reason to skip it. We have not tested anything and we say so on every page. If a figure here is wrong, tell us and we will correct it and date the page.

How products are selected

  1. 01Availability first. A product is only considered if it is currently purchasable. Every item on this site was returned by a live retailer lookup, and the price layer re-checks availability daily.
  2. 02Documentation second. We read the published specification and record what is in it - and, importantly, what is not. A product that publishes nothing can still appear and cannot score well on the documentation metric.
  3. 03Then the rubric. Five metrics per category, scored 0 to 10, applied identically to every product in that category. The rubrics are published in full on how we pick.
  4. 04Then the skip. Every pick gets an explicit disqualifier. This is enforced by the content model rather than by a reviewer remembering: a pick without one does not compile.

What does not enter the selection: commission rate, price, brand, or how often a product appears on other sites. The best value per filing inch on this site is a 40-dollar budget cabinet, and the highest-value purchase anywhere here is a 17-dollar door sweep.

Claims this site will not publish

These are not style preferences. Each is either an FTC deception risk or trivially falsifiable by a reader, a competitor or a search quality rater.

  • No claim of hands-on testing, owned units, a test lab, or 'we tested N products'. We have handled none of these products and every page says so.
  • No invented credential. No engineering qualification, no trade certification, no expert panel, no reviewed-by line. We hold none of those.
  • No tenure or expertise framing for the author. Not 'long-time', 'veteran', 'seasoned', 'years of experience', 'expert' or 'specialist'.
  • No fabricated prices, ratings, review counts or specifications. Prices render from the live price layer or the button says 'Check price on Amazon'. Never a remembered number.
  • No testimonials. This brand is new and has no real ones. Inventing one, or quoting another business's, is prohibited outright.
  • No Review, AggregateRating or Product structured data on our behalf. Those assert a first-hand evaluation we did not perform. Our roundups emit ItemList, which is the honest structure for a ranked list.
  • No recommendation of a product we cannot confirm is purchasable.

Corrections

This is the most important section on this page, because a method built on reading hundreds of specifications will contain errors. Some listings are wrong; some we will read wrong.

  1. 01How to report one. Email info@feltandfile.com or use the contact form, with the page and the figure. A link and a sentence is enough.
  2. 02What we do. Check the figure against the manufacturer's own published specification. If you are right, we change it.
  3. 03When it is material. A correction that changes a recommendation, a ranking or a number a reader might act on gets a visible note on the page.
  4. 04Dates. A materially corrected page has its updated date changed. A typo fix does not, because re-dating a page for a cosmetic change is a lie to both readers and search engines.

We will not quietly change a figure and say nothing. If a number here moved and it mattered, the page will say so.

Update cadence

Accuracy decays in three different ways at three different speeds, so the cadence is split accordingly.

What gets reviewed, and how often
What decaysSpeedCadenceMechanism
PriceDailyAutomated, dailyThe price pipeline refreshes every product. A price that cannot be refreshed falls back to 'Check price' rather than displaying stale
AvailabilityWeeksChecked daily, acted on monthlyA pick that becomes unpurchasable is replaced rather than left linking to a dead listing. A top pick going out of stock is a priority fix
Specifications and picksMonthsQuarterly per roundupRe-verify published specs, check for new entrants, re-rank where warranted
Guides and methodology6 to 12 monthsTwice yearlyRe-check that the arithmetic, the standards references and the recommendations still hold
Trust pagesOn changeImmediatelyAny change to disclosure, method or policy updates the page and its date

The updated date changes only when the content genuinely changed. Re-stamping a page to look fresh is dishonest, and it is also self-defeating: a sitemap that claims every page changed every day trains search engines to ignore the field entirely.

Prices

  • Every price on this site comes from a live data layer, refreshed daily from the retailer.
  • Every displayed price carries the date it was verified.
  • Anything older than 48 hours stops displaying automatically. The button falls back to 'Check price on Amazon', which is honest rather than a number we cannot stand behind.
  • Prices change constantly and we have no control over them. Cost-per-unit figures in our arithmetic are computed against the price at the time of writing and labeled as such; the buy button always carries the current one.

Commercial relationships

Felt & File is an Amazon Associate and earns a commission on qualifying purchases made through links here. That is the entire commercial relationship. There are no sponsored placements, no paid inclusions, no free products accepted and no advertiser relationships of any kind.

If any of that changes, this page changes with it before the content does. The plain-language version is on affiliate disclosure.

Commercial links carry `rel="sponsored nofollow"` and route through our own redirect so a destination can be changed without rewriting content. Links to other publishers and to standards bodies are ordinary editorial links and earn us nothing.

Where we link to a sibling site run by the same publisher, it is because the subject genuinely sits outside this site's scope - whole-home organizing, or paper and stationery - and never as a reciprocal arrangement.

Scope

This site covers acoustics and privacy on one side and filing and storage on the other, for a home office. It does not cover desks, task chairs, monitor arms, standing desks or walking pads, and it does not drift into studio or recording acoustics or into digital file organization - which shares almost every search term with physical desk organizing and is an entirely different subject.

FAQ

Questions people ask

How do you choose which products to include?
Availability first, then published documentation, then a five-metric rubric applied identically to every product in the category, then a mandatory reason to skip each one. Commission rate, brand and price play no part in the ordering.
How do I report an error?
Email info@feltandfile.com or use the contact form with the page and the figure. We check it against the manufacturer's published specification and correct the page if you are right. Material corrections get a visible note and an updated date.
How often are pages updated?
Prices daily and automatically. Availability checked daily and acted on monthly. Specifications and picks quarterly per roundup. Guides and methodology twice yearly. Trust pages immediately on any change.
Does advertising affect your rankings?
There is no advertising. The only commercial relationship is an Amazon affiliate commission, and it does not affect ordering: several top picks here are the cheapest products in their category.
Why do you not mark up your scores as ratings?
Because a rating in structured data asserts a first-hand evaluation we did not perform. Our scores are editorial judgments about published specifications, they appear as ordinary page content, and marking them as product ratings would contradict our own no-testing statement.
