The method

Guides

Where a number can be worked out, we work it out on the page. These are those pages.

Every recommendation on this site rests on a number, and most of those numbers need working out rather than looking up. How much absorbing material a room needs. How many running inches of paper a drawer holds. What a shelf rated at 30 lb can actually carry. These are the pages where we do that arithmetic in public, line by line, so you can check it or disagree with a specific step.

They also cover the things a specification cannot tell you, which is the other half of publishing a method honestly. We have not handled any of the products on this site, and saying what that approach cannot establish is part of saying what it can. The full method is here.

Formats, dimensions and the linear-filing-inch arithmetic that tells you what a cabinet actually holds.

Storage and organizing

Storage and organizing

Load ratings against the real weight of paper, what fits under a desk, and the filing system that survives a busy week.
