Terms of service

What this site is, what it is not, the limits of what we publish, and how purchases actually work.

The short version

This site publishes product information and opinions. It sells nothing, it is not professional advice, and we have not tested any of the products. Figures here are quoted from manufacturers or worked out by us and shown; check anything that matters against the manufacturer before you buy. Purchases happen on the retailer's own site under their terms.

What this site is

Felt & File is an editorial site about acoustics and storage for home offices, published by Slate Mill Group. By using it you agree to these terms. If you do not, please do not use the site.

What the content is, and is not

  • It is product information and our opinions, derived from manufacturers' published specifications and from arithmetic we show on the page.
  • It is not professional advice. Nothing here is acoustic engineering advice, building advice, legal advice, tax advice or financial advice. Where a page touches on document retention we say explicitly that we are not qualified and point you to your own tax authority.
  • It is not based on testing. We have handled none of these products and we say so on every page. How we pick sets out exactly what our method can and cannot establish.
  • It is not a guarantee of outcome. Whether a product solves your problem depends on your room, your paperwork and your circumstances, none of which we can see.

Accuracy, and its limits

We take accuracy seriously - it is the whole product - and we cannot warrant it. Specifically:

  • Manufacturer figures can be wrong. We quote what a manufacturer publishes, attributed to them. Several listings in our own product set contain figures that are internally inconsistent or physically implausible, and we flag those where we find them.
  • Our arithmetic rests on stated assumptions. Where a calculation depends on an assumption - such as the shell allowance used for filing capacity - we label it as one every time it appears.
  • Prices change constantly. Displayed prices come from a live layer refreshed daily and carry their verification date. Anything older than 48 hours stops displaying. The price on the retailer's site is the price.
  • Availability changes. A product that was purchasable when a page was written may not be when you read it.
  • Check anything that matters. If a dimension decides whether something fits your room, confirm it with the manufacturer before ordering. We would rather you did that than relied on us.

Purchases

We sell nothing. Product links take you to Amazon, where the purchase, the payment, the delivery, the warranty and any return are between you and that retailer under their terms.

We earn an affiliate commission on qualifying purchases made through those links, at no extra cost to you. The full disclosure is on affiliate disclosure. We are not party to your transaction and cannot help with an order, a delivery or a return - those go to the retailer.

Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, Felt & File and Slate Mill Group are not liable for any loss arising from your use of this site or from a purchase made after reading it. That includes loss arising from reliance on information here that turns out to be inaccurate or out of date.

The site is provided as is, without warranties of any kind. Some jurisdictions do not allow certain limitations, in which case those limitations apply only to the extent permitted.

Intellectual property

Our content - the writing, the scoring, the arithmetic, the layout - belongs to Slate Mill Group. You are welcome to quote a short passage with a link back. Do not republish pages wholesale or use them to train a model into a competing product.

Product names, brand names and trademarks belong to their owners and are used here to identify products. Their use does not imply any endorsement of this site by them, or by us of them beyond what a page says.

Product photography is served from the retailer's own catalog. Other photography is licensed stock. Standards referenced by name - ASTM C423, ASTM E84, ISO 717-1, ISO 23351-1 - belong to their respective bodies; we name them to identify the method behind a figure and do not reproduce their contents.

We link to retailers, manufacturers and other publishers. We do not control those sites and are not responsible for their content, their accuracy or their privacy practices. A link is not an endorsement of everything on the other end of it.

Changes

These terms may change. The date at the top of this page changes when they do, and continued use of the site after a change means you accept the revised terms.

Can I buy something directly from Felt & File?
No. We sell nothing. Product links take you to Amazon, and the purchase, payment, delivery, warranty and returns are all between you and that retailer under their terms.
Is the information here guaranteed to be accurate?
No, and we are explicit about why. We quote manufacturers' published figures, which can themselves be wrong, and our arithmetic rests on assumptions we label. Confirm anything that decides a purchase with the manufacturer before ordering.
Can I quote or republish your content?
A short quote with a link back is welcome. Republishing pages wholesale, or using them to train a model into a competing product, is not.
Who do I contact about an order?
The retailer. We are not party to your transaction and cannot see, change or help with an order, a delivery or a return.
