A cabinet's real capacity is running inches of hanging folders, not drawer count. Nobody publishes that number, so we work it out.
Which cabinet, in one paragraph
Buy the BIZOEIRON 2-drawer lateral if you have 3 ft of free wall, and the Staples 3-drawer vertical if you do not. The BIZOEIRON is the only cabinet anywhere in our set that publishes a drawer interior, so its 64.88 linear filing inches is measured rather than estimated, and it has a genuine interlock and soft-close slides at about 2.00 dollars an inch. The Staples 3-drawer gives about 47.7 inches in 14.3 in of width at about 2.25 dollars an inch, which is the best value available in a narrow space.
Nobody publishes the number that matters
Every listing tells you its drawer count. Almost none tells you how much paper it holds, and those are not the same question.
A cabinet's real capacity is linear filing inches: the total running inches of hanging folders it accepts. Two cabinets can both be 2-drawer units and differ by a factor of two. A 2-drawer vertical at 18 in deep gives about 30 inches; a 2-drawer lateral at 35 in wide gives about 65. Same drawer count, more than double the paper.
How we compute it
Vertical: folders file front to back, so capacity follows the cabinet's DEPTH
Lateral: folders hang side to side, so capacity follows the cabinet's WIDTH
Usable dimension = published external dimension - 3 in shell allowance
Linear filing inches = usable dimension x number of file drawers
Cost per inch = live price / linear filing inches
The 3 in allowance is DERIVED, not assumed: the BIZOEIRON lateral is the only cabinet in our set that publishes a drawer interior, at 32.44 in inside a 35.43 in exterior - a 2.99 in difference. No vertical cabinet publishes a drawer interior anywhere, so applying it to verticals is an assumption and we label it as one every time.
That figure is also the value metric, and the ranking it produces is different from the one the prices suggest. The cheapest inch on the site is a 40-dollar budget vertical; the most expensive is a 175-dollar brand-name pedestal at nearly eight times the cost per inch. The full table is on best file cabinets for a home office.
Vertical or lateral? Measure your wall
Vertical is 14 to 16 in wide and 18 to 26.5 in deep. It fits a narrow gap beside a desk, and it needs that depth again in front of it for the drawer to open.
Lateral is 28 to 36 in wide and about 16 in deep. It needs a run of wall and gives roughly double the inches per drawer.
The surprise is that both need about 32 in of floor depth once the drawer is out, so the real trade is wall width against capacity rather than one being more space-efficient. Lateral vs vertical file cabinets has the whole decision with the arithmetic.
The specifications worth checking
An interlock, not just a lock. A lock keeps people out; an interlock stops two drawers opening at once, which is what stops a loaded cabinet tipping. Paper weighs roughly 1.5 lb per linear inch, so two open lateral drawers can be over 100 lb of leverage on a 40 lb shell. Every lateral we examined publishes one. Most verticals do not.
Full extension, so you can reach the back file. Three-quarter extension - which the NuSparc publishes honestly - leaves the back quarter awkward, and on a vertical where capacity follows depth that is filing you will stop using.
Paper size. Letter is 8.5 by 11 in; legal is 8.5 by 14, and a legal folder will not fit a letter-only drawer. The laterals here mostly take letter, legal and A4 on adjustable rails; most verticals are letter only.

What the specs are good for
Publishes the drawer interior. It is the only cabinet here whose capacity we did not have to estimate, and that alone earns it the top spot
64.88 measured filing inches from two drawers, more than double the 2-drawer verticals
A true interlock: only one drawer opens at a time, which on a 40 lb cabinet is the thing stopping it coming over
Soft-close ball-bearing slides, specified
Takes legal as well as letter
What they are not
35.43 in wide needs a 3 ft run of clear wall, which a small room may not have
40 lb is light for a lateral, and the interlock is doing real work as a result
Only 15 units in stock at the time of writing
Assembly required
Skip this if
Skip this if you do not have 3 ft of free wall. A lateral's whole advantage is width; in a narrow space it becomes an obstruction and a vertical is the right shape.

What the specs are good for
About 99 filing inches: more than three times a standard 2-drawer vertical, in roughly the same floor area as the 2-drawer lateral
About 1.82 dollars per inch, the best value on the whole site
Interlock across all three drawers
40 in high puts the top drawer at a comfortable standing height rather than a crouch
What they are not
56 lb across three drawers is LESS weight than the 2-drawer model's 67 lb, which is an odd combination on a taller cabinet and makes the interlock essential
40 in high means it will not fit under a desk
No drawer interior and no load rating published
Three loaded lateral drawers is well over 200 lb of paper on a 56 lb shell
Skip this if
Skip this if you cannot anchor it to a wall. A 40 in cabinet weighing 56 lb that can hold 200-plus lb of paper is top-heavy by construction, and Letaya does not supply an anti-tip kit.

What the specs are good for
About 2.25 dollars per filing inch: the best value per inch of any vertical cabinet here and competitive with the laterals
Fifty percent more capacity than the 2-drawer model for 9 dollars more, which is the clearest upgrade decision in this hub
Ball-bearing glides specified on all three drawers, not just the file drawer
26.8 in high still clears a standard 29 in desk apron, so it fits under a desk
What they are not
Does not publish a weight, so you cannot judge tipping risk with the top drawer loaded and open
No interlock mentioned, and a 3-drawer vertical with two drawers out is a genuine tipping hazard
No warranty stated, unlike its 2-drawer sibling's 7 years
Skip this if
Skip this if it is going somewhere a child plays. A tall narrow cabinet with no interlock and no published weight is the configuration that tips, and Staples publishes neither the weight nor an anti-tip kit for this one.

About 1.34 dollars per filing inch, by far the cheapest capacity anywhere in this hub
Publishes a 120 lb top load, so you know whether a printer can sit on it. Hardly anyone publishes this
51 lb of steel in a 40-dollar cabinet: nearly double the weight of the Staples letter cabinet at less than half the price
Takes legal AND A4 as well as letter, and names all three
Names the actual coating process rather than saying powder-coated

What the specs are good for
BOTH drawers take hanging files, stated explicitly. Most mobile cabinets give you one file drawer and two box drawers and leave you to find out
About 1.87 dollars per filing inch, the best value of any mobile unit here
A center caster plus 55 lb of steel: the most stable budget roller in this set
Removable hanging bar, so a drawer becomes a plain drawer when you need one
Full-extension slides at 55 dollars
What they are not
The listing gives 26.1 in in its dimension fields and 27.5 in in its text, a 1.4 in discrepancy that matters if it has to go under a desk
No glide material stated, only the extension
No warranty
Skip this if
Skip this if it has to fit a tight desk clearance. With the published height disagreeing with itself by 1.4 in, measure your apron and allow the larger figure.
Who it is for. The default mobile filing cabinet for a home office: two real file drawers, locks, rolls, stays put.
Before buying, two guides are worth the ten minutes: file cabinet dimensions has every published measurement in one table, and a document filing system for a home usually reduces the cabinet you need by one size, because sorting removes more than half of most households' paper.
FAQ
Questions people ask about file cabinets
How much paper does a file cabinet hold?+
Measured in linear filing inches. A 2-drawer vertical at 18 in deep holds about 30; a 2-drawer lateral at 35 in wide holds about 65. One linear inch is roughly 150 to 200 sheets, so a 2-drawer lateral holds around 10,000 sheets.
Vertical or lateral file cabinet?+
Lateral if you have about 3 ft of free wall: more inches per drawer and generally better cost per inch. Vertical if you only have a narrow gap. Both need about 32 in of floor depth once the drawer is open, which surprises people.
Do I need a locking file cabinet?+
For most home filing the useful feature is the interlock rather than the key lock: it stops two drawers opening at once and keeps a loaded cabinet from tipping. A key lock matters if the contents are genuinely sensitive, and it offers no fire protection whatsoever.
What size file cabinet do I need?+
Stand your files upright and measure the run in inches. Under 30 inches is a 2-drawer vertical; 30 to 70 is a 2-drawer lateral; over 70 is a 3-drawer lateral. That measurement compares directly to the linear filing inch figures we publish for every cabinet.
Are metal or wood file cabinets better?+
Metal for capacity per dollar, longevity under load and water resistance. Wood-finish board for a room where the cabinet is visible, since in this price band that means particleboard with a finish rather than timber.

Our arithmetic: the 3 in shell allowance for filing capacity
Only one cabinet in our set publishes a drawer interior — the BIZOEIRON lateral, at 32.44 in interior inside a 35.43 in exterior, a 2.99 in difference. We round that to 3 in and apply it to every other cabinet's published external figure. It is derived from one lateral cabinet, so applying it to verticals is an assumption and we label it as one every time.
Our arithmetic: the weight of office paper
A standard letter-size banker's box holds about 2,500 sheets; 2,500 sheets of 20 lb bond weighs about 25 lb, so a full box is roughly 30 lb including the box. That works out at about 1.5 lb per linear inch of upright files. Every shelf-load and cabinet-load comparison on this site uses those figures and shows the sum.
ANSI/BIFMA office furniture standards
Cited by Staples for its mobile pedestal. It is the only furniture-standard claim anywhere in this product set, which is itself worth knowing.
