A shelf rated at 30 lb holds one box of paper. That sentence decides most of this category, and almost nobody does the sum.
Which storage, in one paragraph
For an archive, buy the INTERGREAT 72 in steel cabinet: 180 lb per shelf, 900 lb total and a published 0.88 mm steel gauge. For things you use weekly, buy the Furinno 8-cube: 60 lb per cube, 540 lb total, FSC wood and a wall anchor in the box. Those two numbers - 180 and 60 - are the whole decision, because paper is heavier than shelving expects. And whatever else you do, spend 11 dollars on under-desk mounted drawers first: they cost no floor and no desk surface at all.
The sum that decides this category
What a box of paper actually weighs
A standard letter-size banker's box holds about 2,500 sheets
2,500 sheets of 20 lb bond weighs about 25 lb
Add the box: a full banker's box is about 30 lb
Which is about 1.5 lb per linear inch of upright files
So a shelf rated at 30 lb holds ONE box, not three
And a 5-tier unit at 30 lb per shelf holds about 150 lb total - five boxes across the whole unit
Our arithmetic. This is the sum that decides whether shelving is the right product, and it is why we score published load ratings separately from capacity on every page in this hub.
Run that against what the products publish and the ranking becomes obvious. A steel cabinet shelf at 180 lb is six boxes. A cube at 60 lb is two. A narrow tiered bookcase at 30 lb is one, and at 10 to 12 in deep it will not take a box front-on anyway.
Depth rules things out faster than load does, and it is published more reliably. A letter-size banker's box is about 15 by 12 in, so anything under 12 in deep cannot hold one however strong its shelf is. Check depth first.
The three formats
Under the desk, 11 to 105 dollars
The cheapest storage you own, because it is already there. Mounted drawers adhere to the underside of the desktop for 11 dollars, cost no floor and no surface, and hold the stationery that currently lives on the desk because there is nowhere else. A rolling cart on one side handles bulk.
The constraint is knee depth: you can usually only put something 14 to 18 in back before your legs hit it, which is why under-desk carts sit beside your knees rather than behind them. Best under-desk storage and under-desk storage ideas.
Lockable steel cabinets, 84 to 160 dollars
The archive answer. Three to six times the shelf load of any shelving, behind doors, with a 3-point lock on the better ones. The 72 in models give five or six bays; the 36 in version fits under a window or a sloped ceiling and gives you a usable surface on top.
Anchor anything over about 60 in. A 72 in cabinet rated to 900 lb standing on 32 in of floor is a tipping hazard by geometry, and only one in our set publishes wall-fixing provision. Best office storage cabinets.
Open shelving, 38 to 80 dollars
Cheaper per bay, lighter rated, and everything in it is visible - which for reference material you use weekly beats a closed door every time. Cube shelving with fixed dividers publishes genuinely higher loads than adjustable tiered units, because rigidity is what stops a shelf sagging.
Fabric bins turn selected bays into closed storage for about 10 dollars each, which is the feature that makes shelving work in a room where the contents are not all presentable. Best office shelving and office shelving ideas.
What is NOT in this hub
Hanging folders. If what you are storing is files rather than boxes, this is the wrong hub and file cabinets is the right one. Shelving and cabinets store boxes and bulk; a filing cabinet stores paper you retrieve by name.
Desks, chairs, monitor arms and standing desks. Out of scope for this site entirely, and covered better elsewhere.

Paper capacity
About 6 banker's boxes per shelf, from the 180 lb rating
Our arithmetic at about 30 lb per full letter-size banker's box
What the specs are good for
Publishes the steel gauge at 0.88 mm. Nobody else in this hub publishes a gauge, and it is what separates a cabinet from a tin box
180 lb per shelf and 900 lb total — six boxes of paper per shelf, which is the only cabinet here that can genuinely archive
A 3-point locking system rather than a single cam lock
Pre-drilled wall-anchor holes on a 72 in cabinet, and it tells you they are there
Adjustable shelves, so one tall bay for a printer and three short ones for boxes
What they are not
72 in tall and 81.79 lb empty: this is a two-person carry and a permanent decision
Shelves hold boxes, not hanging files, so it archives rather than files
No warranty stated
Ships in 1 to 2 days rather than from stock

Skip this if you cannot anchor it to a wall. A 72 in cabinet holding up to 900 lb on 32 in of floor is a tipping hazard by geometry, and the anchor holes exist because INTERGREAT knows it.

Paper capacity
About 2 banker's boxes per cube, from the 60 lb rating
Our arithmetic at about 30 lb per full letter-size banker's box
What the specs are good for
Two more cubes for 10 dollars, which is the clearest incremental value in this hub
540 lb total published, the highest-rated shelving here
Same 30 in width, so it takes no more floor than the 6-cube
Wall anchor included, and at 57.91 in you will use it
What they are not
57.91 in tall means the top cubes are above eye level and awkward to load
49.1 lb, and the extra height makes anchoring mandatory rather than advisable
Same fixed 13.4 in cube limitation
No doors, no lock

Paper capacity
About 6 banker's boxes per shelf, from the 180 lb rating
Our arithmetic at about 30 lb per full letter-size banker's box
What the specs are good for
180 lb per shelf, matching the 72 in INTERGREAT, in a cabinet half the height and a third of the price
36 in high fits under a window or a sloped ceiling, where a 71 in cabinet cannot go
A usable 36 in work surface on top at standing-desk-ish height
Shock-absorbing feet, which protects both the floor and a wobbly cabinet
No wall anchor needed at this height and weight
What they are not
Two shelves only, so three bays total. Capacity is a third of the tall cabinets
46 lb empty with 360 lb of rated shelf capacity, which is a lot of load on a light shell
Single key lock rather than a 3-point system
No total load published, only the per-shelf figure
Skip this if
Skip this if you need volume. Three bays is roughly 18 boxes at the published rating, and if that is enough the cabinet is excellent; if it is not, the 72 in version is the only answer.

What the specs are good for
A 150 lb published load, which is 100 boxes-worth of certainty the other carts here do not give you
Publishes per-drawer dimensions at 12 x 16.5 x 4.25 in, so you can check what fits
4.25 in drawer depth, more than double the under-desk adhesive drawers
Drawer stops, so a pulled drawer does not come out onto the floor
14 lb carrying 150 lb is a genuinely good frame-to-load ratio
What they are not
Does not say whether any drawer takes hanging files, so as a filing product it is unconfirmed
Mesh drawers: dust and small items
Only two of the casters lock
26.6 in is 0.2 in taller than the SWTYMIKI, which is irrelevant until your desk apron is exactly 26.5 in
Skip this if
Skip this if you specifically need hanging files. Aokitsink publishes the load and the drawer size and says nothing about file rails, and a 4.25 in drawer will not hang folders upright anyway.
Who it is for. Heavy under-desk storage — reams, equipment, binders — where the 150 lb figure is the reason to buy.

What the specs are good for
Eleven dollars for two drawers, which is the best value on the site by a distance
Four removable dividers across two drawers, so pens, cables and sticky notes each get a compartment
Mounts entirely under the desktop, so it costs zero desk surface and zero floor
Bostitch is an actual office-products brand with a product line behind it
What they are not
No published load rating, and adhesive mounting under a desk is exactly where you want one
1.91 in deep: this holds stationery, not notebooks or anything with a spine
Self-adhesive only, no screw option, so removal will take finish with it
Needs a smooth flat underside, which a desk with a frame rail or a cable tray may not have
Skip this if
Skip this if your desk underside is textured, has a visible frame, or is anything other than a flat smooth panel. Adhesive drawers come off, and they come off full.
Who it is for. Every desk. This is the first eleven dollars we would spend on a cluttered one.
If the room is small, storage for a small home office covers the narrow and short formats that fit where standard furniture does not.
FAQ
Questions people ask about office storage
How much weight can office shelving hold?+
Where it is published, 30 to 60 lb per shelf, which is one to two full banker's boxes. A steel storage cabinet publishes 120 to 180 lb per shelf, which is four to six. If you are storing paper, the cabinet is the right product.
Storage cabinet or shelving for an office?+
Cabinet for paper, anything heavy, and anything that should be out of sight or locked. Shelving for books, reference material and anything you reach for weekly, because visible access beats a closed door for frequently-used items. Most home offices want both.
What is the best under-desk storage?+
Mounted drawers on the underside of the desktop at about 11 dollars, because they cost no floor and no desk surface at all. For volume, a rolling cart with a published load rating, which only two of the carts we examined have.
What depth should office storage be?+
At least 14 in if banker's boxes or lever-arch files are going in it, since a letter box is about 15 by 12 in. Steel cabinets are typically 16 in deep and cube shelving 14.57; most bookcases are 10 to 12 and will not take a box front-on.
Does office shelving need anchoring?+
Yes, and every unit we examined ships an anti-tip kit for that reason. A 60 in unit weighing 25 lb with a loaded top shelf is exactly the configuration that comes forward. Fit the anchor on assembly day.

Our arithmetic: the weight of office paper
A standard letter-size banker's box holds about 2,500 sheets; 2,500 sheets of 20 lb bond weighs about 25 lb, so a full box is roughly 30 lb including the box. That works out at about 1.5 lb per linear inch of upright files. Every shelf-load and cabinet-load comparison on this site uses those figures and shows the sum.
