In this price band wood means board with a finish. That is fine, and it changes which specifications matter.

The short answer
Buy the VINGLI 3-drawer if you want three drawers in a 15.35 in square footprint, and the DEVAISE rolling cabinet if it needs to double as a printer stand. The VINGLI gives about 37.1 linear filing inches, locks each drawer independently, ships an anti-tip kit, and its hanging rods come out so a drawer can be plain storage instead. The DEVAISE publishes a 150 lb top load, which is the figure a printer stand needs and which most cabinets at any price do not give you.
What wood means here
Particleboard or MDF with a printed or laminated wood-grain finish. Every cabinet on this page says so if you read the specification: VASAGLE names ink black particleboard, VINGLI names rustic particleboard, DEVAISE names top-grade board.
That is not a criticism, it is the market. Solid timber filing cabinets exist at four to ten times these prices. What matters is that board changes which specifications you should care about:
Water is the enemy. Board swells at the bottom edge and never recovers. Steel shrugs it off. Do not put one in a damp room or near a window that gets left open.
Drawer bottoms bow under sustained load, which steel ones do not. At roughly 1.5 lb per linear inch of files, a full drawer is real weight sitting on a thin panel for years.
Published top load matters more, because you cannot infer it from the material the way you can with steel.
Anti-tip hardware matters more, because these cabinets are lighter than their steel equivalents at the same height.

Our arithmetic using the 3 in shell allowance derived from the one cabinet in our set that publishes a drawer interior. Cost per inch is against the live price at the time of writing.
Every wood cabinet here costs more per filing inch than the steel equivalent, and the gap is 20 to 130 per cent. The cheapest steel cabinet on the site is about 1.34 dollars an inch; the cheapest wood one here is 2.42. You are paying for the finish, which is a legitimate thing to pay for in a visible room and should be a conscious decision.
The feature steel does not offer
Removable hanging rods. The VINGLI publishes two solid metal rods per drawer that come out entirely, so a drawer is files this year and stationery next.
No steel cabinet in our set offers that, and it is genuinely useful in a household where the amount of paper is falling - which, with scan-and-shred, it should be. A filing cabinet whose drawers can stop being filing drawers outlives the filing.
The lock arrangement to check
Two of these lock every drawer independently and one of them locks almost nothing.
The DEVAISE 2-drawer farmhouse cabinet's lock covers the upper drawer only. The lower file drawer, where the actual documents go, is open. That is published honestly and is easy to miss, and it is the wrong way round for a filing cabinet. If the lock is the reason you are buying, buy the VASAGLE or the VINGLI, both of which lock all three drawers separately. Locking file cabinets goes through all four mechanisms.

What the specs are good for
Rods are removable, so a drawer can be files this year and stationery next. No steel cabinet here offers that
Two metal rods per drawer rather than one, so folders do not splay
Anti-tip kit included at 38.58 in tall
Independent locks with two keys each
15.35 in square footprint, genuinely compact for three drawers
What they are not
Letter size only, no legal
Particleboard with a wood grain finish: it looks the part and will not take water
43 lb at 38.58 in tall, so the anti-tip kit is not optional
About 2.42 dollars per filing inch

Skip this if the room is damp or the cabinet will sit near a window that gets left open. Particleboard swells at the bottom edge and never recovers.

What the specs are good for
Three separately locking drawers, which is the right design if the cabinet is shared and only one drawer is yours
An anti-tip kit actually included, on a 40.6 in cabinet. It is the only tall cabinet here that ships one
Adjustable rails in all three drawers, so each can be set for A4 or letter independently
All three are file drawers, not two files and a stationery tray
What they are not
Three separate locks means three keys to keep track of
Particleboard at 40.6 in tall carrying three drawers of paper is the construction most likely to sag at the drawer bottoms over years
About 2.62 dollars per filing inch, mid-pack
Does not take legal size
Skip this if
Skip this if two people will use it and both want everything locked. Three separate locks is a feature for separate contents and a nuisance for shared ones.

What the specs are good for
A 150 lb top load published, which makes it a genuine printer stand
Two full-extension file drawers, not one, and it says so
Five casters with a center anti-tip caster
Scratch and water resistant board, which matters on a cabinet that gets dragged
What they are not
About 2.88 dollars per filing inch, more than the steel rollers here
30.8 in high will not fit under most desks, which undercuts the point of casters
Board construction rather than steel: it will not survive repeated moves the way the SISESOL will
Does not state a legal-size capability
Skip this if
Skip this if it needs to go under a desk. At 30.8 in it is taller than a standard desk apron, so you are paying for mobility it cannot use in the one place a mobile cabinet usually lives.
Who it is for. A printer that needs a stand, next to a desk rather than under it, in a room where steel would look wrong.
If the cabinet lives behind a desk, under a window, or anywhere out of the room's sightline, buy steel. It costs 20 to 130 per cent less per filing inch, holds more, survives water, and lasts longer under load. Best file cabinets for a home office ranks the whole set on cost per inch.
Buy wood when the cabinet is furniture - in a living room, a guest room, or an office where it is the first thing anyone sees. That is a real reason and it is worth the premium when it applies.
FAQ
Questions people ask about this
Are wood file cabinets good?+
For a visible room, yes. Understand what wood means at this price: particleboard or MDF with a wood-grain finish, which swells permanently if it gets damp and whose drawer bottoms bow under sustained load. Every one costs more per filing inch than the steel equivalent.
How much does a wood file cabinet hold?+
The cabinets here hold about 25.6 to 38.1 linear filing inches, which is roughly 4,000 to 6,000 sheets. A 3-drawer wood vertical gives about 37 inches in a 15 in square footprint.
Do wood file cabinets tip over?+
They are lighter than steel at the same height, which makes them more prone to it. Encouragingly, the only cabinets in our entire set that ship an anti-tip kit are the wood ones. Fit it on assembly day rather than meaning to later.
Can I put a printer on a wood file cabinet?+
Check the published top load. DEVAISE publishes 150 lb on its rolling cabinet and 66 lb on its 2-drawer, which brackets most home printers. On board construction the published figure matters more than it does with steel, because you cannot infer it from the material.
Wood or metal file cabinet?+
Metal for capacity per dollar, water resistance and longevity under load. Wood when the cabinet is visible and should look like furniture. The price gap per filing inch is 20 to 130 per cent, which is what the finish costs.

Our arithmetic: the 3 in shell allowance for filing capacity
Only one cabinet in our set publishes a drawer interior — the BIZOEIRON lateral, at 32.44 in interior inside a 35.43 in exterior, a 2.99 in difference. We round that to 3 in and apply it to every other cabinet's published external figure. It is derived from one lateral cabinet, so applying it to verticals is an assumption and we label it as one every time.
Our arithmetic: the weight of office paper
A standard letter-size banker's box holds about 2,500 sheets; 2,500 sheets of 20 lb bond weighs about 25 lb, so a full box is roughly 30 lb including the box. That works out at about 1.5 lb per linear inch of upright files. Every shelf-load and cabinet-load comparison on this site uses those figures and shows the sum.
