Usually the best value per inch in the whole category, and the format most likely to need anchoring to a wall.

The short answer
Buy the Letaya 3-drawer lateral. About 99 linear filing inches for about 1.82 dollars an inch, which is the best value anywhere on this site and roughly three times what a standard 2-drawer vertical holds, in about the same floor area. If you need it narrow, the Staples 3-drawer vertical gives about 47.7 inches in 14.3 in of width at about 2.25 dollars an inch. Both need anchoring, and we are specific below about why.
Why three drawers is usually the value answer
The shell, the lock, the slides and the assembly are most of what you pay for in a file cabinet. Adding a third drawer adds material but not much else, so the cost per linear inch falls.

The tipping arithmetic, which is not theoretical
Three-drawer cabinets are the format that tips, and the numbers make it obvious why.
A fully loaded 3-drawer lateral
Letaya 3-drawer lateral: about 99 linear filing inches total
99 inches x 1.5 lb per inch = about 149 lb of paper
Cabinet's own published weight = 56 lb
Paper to shell ratio = about 2.7 to 1
With the top drawer open at 40 in high, that load is cantilevered 16 in forward
Our arithmetic from the published dimensions and the paper-weight figure in the sources. Letaya publishes an interlock, which stops two drawers opening at once and is doing most of the safety work here. No anti-tip kit is supplied.
Two cabinets here ship an anti-tip kit: the VASAGLE and the VINGLI, both wood 3-drawer verticals, and both publish it clearly. The steel laterals rely on their interlocks instead. We would anchor all of them, and if there are children in the house we would treat that as non-negotiable.
Height, and whether it fits under anything
A 3-drawer vertical is 26.8 to 41.75 in tall. A 3-drawer lateral is about 40 in. Only the Staples at 26.8 in clears a standard 29 in desk apron, so for everything else the cabinet stands in the open and the top becomes a surface.
That surface is worth something at 40 in: it is near standing-desk height, which makes it a genuinely useful printer or scanner station. The Letaya printer-stand model is sold for exactly that, though it does not publish a top load rating, which for a product named printer stand is a conspicuous gap. The SISESOL vertical at 40 dollars publishes 120 lb; this at 160 publishes nothing.

What the specs are good for
About 99 filing inches: more than three times a standard 2-drawer vertical, in roughly the same floor area as the 2-drawer lateral
About 1.82 dollars per inch, the best value on the whole site
Interlock across all three drawers
40 in high puts the top drawer at a comfortable standing height rather than a crouch
What they are not
56 lb across three drawers is LESS weight than the 2-drawer model's 67 lb, which is an odd combination on a taller cabinet and makes the interlock essential
40 in high means it will not fit under a desk
No drawer interior and no load rating published
Three loaded lateral drawers is well over 200 lb of paper on a 56 lb shell
Skip this if
Skip this if you cannot anchor it to a wall. A 40 in cabinet weighing 56 lb that can hold 200-plus lb of paper is top-heavy by construction, and Letaya does not supply an anti-tip kit.

What the specs are good for
About 2.25 dollars per filing inch: the best value per inch of any vertical cabinet here and competitive with the laterals
Fifty percent more capacity than the 2-drawer model for 9 dollars more, which is the clearest upgrade decision in this hub
Ball-bearing glides specified on all three drawers, not just the file drawer
26.8 in high still clears a standard 29 in desk apron, so it fits under a desk
What they are not
Does not publish a weight, so you cannot judge tipping risk with the top drawer loaded and open
No interlock mentioned, and a 3-drawer vertical with two drawers out is a genuine tipping hazard
No warranty stated, unlike its 2-drawer sibling's 7 years
Skip this if
Skip this if it is going somewhere a child plays. A tall narrow cabinet with no interlock and no published weight is the configuration that tips, and Staples publishes neither the weight nor an anti-tip kit for this one.
Who it is for. Someone with a few years of paper who wants the cheapest honest capacity and has a wall to put it against.
Absence confirmed against the published specification
What the specs are good for
28.35 in wide fits a 30 in gap, unlike the 36 in Letayas
About 76 filing inches, which is more than any vertical here by a factor of 1.5
Full-extension slides AND an interlock AND an anti-tilt mechanism, all specified
39.84 in puts the printer at a usable standing height
What they are not
Sold as a printer stand and does not publish a top load rating, which is the one spec a printer stand needs. The SISESOL vertical at 40 dollars publishes 120 lb; this at 160 dollars publishes nothing
The feature text says "four deep and spacious drawers" on a 3-drawer cabinet, which is a copy error that does not inspire confidence
No drawer interior published
Skip this if
Skip this as a printer stand specifically. It does not publish a top load, and a heavy laser printer on an unrated surface is how you find out. As a 3-drawer lateral in a 30 in space it is a good cabinet.
Who it is for. A 30 in gap that needs maximum filing and a flat top for something light.

What the specs are good for
Three separately locking drawers, which is the right design if the cabinet is shared and only one drawer is yours
An anti-tip kit actually included, on a 40.6 in cabinet. It is the only tall cabinet here that ships one
Adjustable rails in all three drawers, so each can be set for A4 or letter independently
All three are file drawers, not two files and a stationery tray
What they are not
Three separate locks means three keys to keep track of
Particleboard at 40.6 in tall carrying three drawers of paper is the construction most likely to sag at the drawer bottoms over years
About 2.62 dollars per filing inch, mid-pack
Does not take legal size
Skip this if
Skip this if two people will use it and both want everything locked. Three separate locks is a feature for separate contents and a nuisance for shared ones.

Lock

NuSparc published specification
What the specs are good for
Fully welded steel rather than bolted panels, which is a structurally different and better cabinet
Pre-assembled, which with a welded frame is the only way it could arrive
Three full letter-size file drawers at 21.72 in depth, the deepest vertical drawers here
Smooth glide suspension on all three
What they are not
3/4 extension means the back quarter of a 21.72 in drawer is awkward to reach, which is why our capacity figure is lower than the raw depth suggests
The lock covers the top two drawers only; the bottom drawer is open
The listed 28.6 lb is implausible for a welded steel 3-drawer cabinet and is likely a data error, so we cannot judge stability
About 3.45 dollars per filing inch, the second-worst value here
Skip this if
Skip this if value per inch matters. You are paying a premium for welded construction and 3/4 extension gives some of the capacity back. Buy it for the build, not the arithmetic.
Who it is for. Someone who has had a bolted flat-pack cabinet rack itself out of square and does not want to repeat it.
A fair question, and the honest answer is that empty drawers fill. About 99 linear inches is roughly 15,000 to 20,000 sheets, which no household generates in a decade of normal life.
But a file cabinet is bought once and kept for fifteen years, and the marginal cost of the third drawer is small - 8.50 dollars in the Staples case. The failure mode of buying two drawers is a stack of banker's boxes in a corner three years later, which is the thing you were trying to avoid.
If you genuinely have under about 30 inches of paper and always will, 2-drawer cabinets is the right page and under-desk storage covers the smaller formats still. Before buying anything, a document filing system for a home is worth ten minutes, because deciding what to keep is usually a bigger lever than deciding where to put it.
FAQ
Questions people ask about this
How much does a 3-drawer file cabinet hold?+
A 3-drawer vertical at 18.9 in deep holds about 47.7 linear filing inches. A 3-drawer lateral at 36 in wide holds about 99. That is roughly 7,000 and 15,000 sheets respectively.
Is a 3-drawer file cabinet better value than a 2-drawer?+
Usually, yes. The shell, the lock, the slides and the assembly are most of the cost, so the third drawer is cheap capacity. The Staples pair is the clearest example: 59 per cent more filing for 8.50 dollars.
Do 3-drawer file cabinets need to be anchored?+
We would anchor all of them. A fully loaded 3-drawer lateral carries about 149 lb of paper on a 56 lb shell, and an open top drawer cantilevers that load 16 in forward. Two cabinets in our set ship an anti-tip kit; the rest rely on an interlock.
How tall is a 3-drawer file cabinet?+
Verticals are 26.8 to 41.75 in; laterals are about 40 in. Only one cabinet in our set, the Staples vertical at 26.8 in, clears a standard desk apron and fits underneath.
Should each drawer lock separately?+
Only if the cabinet is shared and one drawer is private. Separate locks mean three keys to keep track of. A single central lock is simpler and is what most of the category uses.

Our arithmetic: the 3 in shell allowance for filing capacity
Only one cabinet in our set publishes a drawer interior — the BIZOEIRON lateral, at 32.44 in interior inside a 35.43 in exterior, a 2.99 in difference. We round that to 3 in and apply it to every other cabinet's published external figure. It is derived from one lateral cabinet, so applying it to verticals is an assumption and we label it as one every time.
Our arithmetic: the weight of office paper
A standard letter-size banker's box holds about 2,500 sheets; 2,500 sheets of 20 lb bond weighs about 25 lb, so a full box is roughly 30 lb including the box. That works out at about 1.5 lb per linear inch of upright files. Every shelf-load and cabinet-load comparison on this site uses those figures and shows the sum.
