Four different mechanisms get described as a lock, and two of them are doing a completely different job from the one you are shopping for.

The short answer
Buy the BIZOEIRON lateral if you want one key and a genuine interlock, and the VASAGLE 3-drawer if different drawers need different access. Those are the two honest answers to two different questions. What you should not buy without knowing is the DEVAISE wood cabinet, whose lock covers the upper stationery drawer only and leaves the lower file drawer - where the documents actually are - completely open.
Four mechanisms, all called a lock
What each mechanism actually does
Mechanism
What it does
Who publishes one
Central lock
One key secures all drawers at once. Simple, one key to lose
Mechanically prevents two drawers opening at once. This is an ANTI-TIP feature, not a security one, and it is often the more useful of the two
BIZOEIRON, INTERGREAT, Greenvelly, all three Letayas, DEVAISE wood
Per-drawer locks
Each drawer locks independently. Right for a shared cabinet; three keys
VASAGLE, VINGLI
Partial lock
Secures only some drawers. Read carefully
NuSparc (top two of three), DEVAISE wood (upper drawer only)
Compiled from each listing's own published specification, 2026-10-03.
What a file cabinet lock is and is not
Be clear about the threat model, because the category is marketed loosely.
A file cabinet lock is good at keeping a cleaner, a visitor, a flatmate or a child out of your paperwork. It stops casual access, which is the realistic risk in a home.
A file cabinet lock is not good at resisting someone who actually wants in. The lock is typically a wafer cam lock and the cabinet is 0.8 mm steel or particleboard. Anyone determined does not need to defeat the lock at all.
For documents where the consequence of loss is severe - passports, deeds, birth certificates, the will - the answer is not a better cabinet lock. It is a certified fire-and-water box, which is a different product with a different threat model and third-party verification behind it. Fireproof cabinet vs safe covers that properly.
Keys, and the thing that goes wrong
Every cabinet here ships with two keys, which sounds like redundancy and mostly means two things to lose.
Letaya ships a folding key, which sounds trivial and is the one design here that acknowledges the key lives on a keyring for fifteen years.
Per-drawer locking cabinets ship two keys per lock, so a VASAGLE 3-drawer arrives with six keys. Label them on day one.
Replacement keys are generally not available for cabinets in this price band. The practical backup is one key in use and one taped inside something you own.
How we ranked these
The hub's five metrics, with security weighted most heavily on this page: mechanism type, whether it covers all drawers, and whether an interlock or anti-tip is published alongside. Full rubric on how we pick.

BIZOEIRON 2-Drawer Lateral File Cabinet, 35.43 in WideThe only cabinet in this hub that publishes its drawer interior, so its capacity is measured rather than estimated. Central lock, one drawer at a time, soft-close.
VASAGLE 3-Drawer Vertical File Cabinet with LocksThree file drawers that each lock separately, adjustable rails in all three, and an anti-tip kit in the box. 40.6 in tall.
INTERGREAT 2-Drawer Lateral File Cabinet (LFC001)Publishes 110 lb per drawer and 220 lb total, plus a folder count. The only cabinet here that tells you what the drawers can carry.
Letaya 3-Drawer Lateral File Cabinet, 36 in Wide (AA1)Three 36 in drawers, about 99 filing inches, at about 1.82 dollars per inch. The largest and best-value capacity we found.
VINGLI 3-Drawer Tall Wood Vertical File CabinetTwo metal hanging rods per drawer and rods you can remove entirely, so each drawer is either files or a plain drawer. Anti-tip kit included.
SISESOL 2-Drawer Narrow Vertical File CabinetForty dollars, 51 lb of steel, a 120 lb published top load, and it takes letter, legal and A4. The budget pick with real numbers.
NuSparc 3-Drawer Locking Filing Cabinet, Welded SteelFully welded steel, pre-assembled, three letter-size file drawers. Only the top two lock and the drawers open 3/4.
DEVAISE 2-Drawer Wood File Cabinet with InterlockAn X-pattern farmhouse front with a real interlock, a 66 lb top load and wall-mounting hardware in the box.

What the specs are good for
Publishes the drawer interior. It is the only cabinet here whose capacity we did not have to estimate, and that alone earns it the top spot
64.88 measured filing inches from two drawers, more than double the 2-drawer verticals
A true interlock: only one drawer opens at a time, which on a 40 lb cabinet is the thing stopping it coming over
Soft-close ball-bearing slides, specified
Takes legal as well as letter
What they are not
35.43 in wide needs a 3 ft run of clear wall, which a small room may not have
40 lb is light for a lateral, and the interlock is doing real work as a result
Only 15 units in stock at the time of writing
Assembly required
Skip this if
Skip this if you do not have 3 ft of free wall. A lateral's whole advantage is width; in a narrow space it becomes an obstruction and a vertical is the right shape.
Who it is for. Anyone with a wall and more than a couple of years of paper. This is the cabinet we would buy.

What the specs are good for
Three separately locking drawers, which is the right design if the cabinet is shared and only one drawer is yours
An anti-tip kit actually included, on a 40.6 in cabinet. It is the only tall cabinet here that ships one
Adjustable rails in all three drawers, so each can be set for A4 or letter independently
All three are file drawers, not two files and a stationery tray
What they are not
Three separate locks means three keys to keep track of
Particleboard at 40.6 in tall carrying three drawers of paper is the construction most likely to sag at the drawer bottoms over years
About 2.62 dollars per filing inch, mid-pack
Does not take legal size
Skip this if
Skip this if two people will use it and both want everything locked. Three separate locks is a feature for separate contents and a nuisance for shared ones.
Who it is for. A shared study where one drawer is private, in a room where black board furniture fits.
110 lb per drawer published. Paper is heavy — roughly 1.5 lb per linear inch of files — so this is the number that tells you the slides will survive a full drawer
Two adjustable hanging rails per drawer, so you can file front-to-back as well as side-to-side
A genuine anti-tilt interlock on a 45 lb cabinet
About 2.00 dollars per filing inch
28 in wide fits a 30 in alcove, where the BIZOEIRON will not
What they are not
The "300 hanging folders" claim is implausible: 300 folders would be roughly 30 linear inches of tightly compressed paper weighing well over the drawer's own published 110 lb limit. We would ignore that number and trust the load rating
Does not publish a drawer interior, so our capacity figure is an estimate
No warranty stated
Assembly required
Skip this if
Skip this if you have the wall for the BIZOEIRON. That one publishes a measured interior and a soft-close action for the same price per inch; this one wins on the load rating and loses on everything that is actually verifiable.
Who it is for. A 30 in alcove and a lot of heavy paper.

What the specs are good for
About 99 filing inches: more than three times a standard 2-drawer vertical, in roughly the same floor area as the 2-drawer lateral
About 1.82 dollars per inch, the best value on the whole site
Interlock across all three drawers
40 in high puts the top drawer at a comfortable standing height rather than a crouch
What they are not
56 lb across three drawers is LESS weight than the 2-drawer model's 67 lb, which is an odd combination on a taller cabinet and makes the interlock essential
40 in high means it will not fit under a desk
No drawer interior and no load rating published
Three loaded lateral drawers is well over 200 lb of paper on a 56 lb shell
Skip this if
Skip this if you cannot anchor it to a wall. A 40 in cabinet weighing 56 lb that can hold 200-plus lb of paper is top-heavy by construction, and Letaya does not supply an anti-tip kit.

What the specs are good for
About 1.34 dollars per filing inch, by far the cheapest capacity anywhere in this hub
Publishes a 120 lb top load, so you know whether a printer can sit on it. Hardly anyone publishes this
51 lb of steel in a 40-dollar cabinet: nearly double the weight of the Staples letter cabinet at less than half the price
Takes legal AND A4 as well as letter, and names all three
Names the actual coating process rather than saying powder-coated
What they are not
No interlock and no anti-tip hardware mentioned
No warranty stated
"Deep and silent" is the only description of the drawer action; no glide type is named
Assembly required, with the instructions on a product page video rather than in the box
Skip this if
Skip this if the drawer action matters to you. SISESOL publishes the shell, the coating and the load but says nothing about what the drawers run on, and at this price they are unlikely to be ball-bearing full-extension.

Lock
Secures the top two drawers only
NuSparc published specification
What the specs are good for
Fully welded steel rather than bolted panels, which is a structurally different and better cabinet
Pre-assembled, which with a welded frame is the only way it could arrive
Three full letter-size file drawers at 21.72 in depth, the deepest vertical drawers here
Smooth glide suspension on all three
What they are not
3/4 extension means the back quarter of a 21.72 in drawer is awkward to reach, which is why our capacity figure is lower than the raw depth suggests
The lock covers the top two drawers only; the bottom drawer is open
The listed 28.6 lb is implausible for a welded steel 3-drawer cabinet and is likely a data error, so we cannot judge stability
About 3.45 dollars per filing inch, the second-worst value here
Skip this if
Skip this if value per inch matters. You are paying a premium for welded construction and 3/4 extension gives some of the capacity back. Buy it for the build, not the arithmetic.
Who it is for. Someone who has had a bolted flat-pack cabinet rack itself out of square and does not want to repeat it.
They are a deterrent rather than a security device. A wafer cam lock in a cabinet made of 0.8 mm steel or particleboard stops casual access, which is the realistic risk in a home. For documents whose loss would be serious, use a certified fire-and-water box instead.
What is an interlock on a file cabinet?+
A mechanism that prevents more than one drawer opening at a time. It is an anti-tip feature rather than a security one, and on a loaded cabinet it is often more valuable than the lock: a fully loaded 3-drawer lateral carries about 149 lb of paper on a 56 lb shell.
Should every drawer lock separately?+
Only if the cabinet is shared and one drawer is private. Separate locks mean a key per drawer, so a 3-drawer cabinet arrives with six keys. A single central lock is simpler for one user.
Can I get replacement keys for a file cabinet?+
Usually not in this price band. Both supplied keys are the whole supply. Keep one in use and one taped somewhere you will find it, and do it on the day it arrives rather than the day you need it.
Do all locking file cabinets lock every drawer?+
No, and it is worth reading closely. NuSparc's lock secures the top two drawers of three, and one wood cabinet in our set locks only the upper stationery drawer, leaving the file drawer below it open. Both publish this honestly; both are easy to miss.

Our arithmetic: the weight of office paper
A standard letter-size banker's box holds about 2,500 sheets; 2,500 sheets of 20 lb bond weighs about 25 lb, so a full box is roughly 30 lb including the box. That works out at about 1.5 lb per linear inch of upright files. Every shelf-load and cabinet-load comparison on this site uses those figures and shows the sum.

SentrySafe publishes a UL Classification for fire endurance and an ETL Verification for water submersion, each with a stated duration. We quote their published durations and temperatures and have verified nothing ourselves.
