Drawer count tells you nothing. Running inches of hanging folders tells you everything, and nobody publishes it, so we work it out.

The short answer
Buy the BIZOEIRON 2-drawer lateral if you have 3 ft of free wall, and the Staples 3-drawer vertical if you do not. The BIZOEIRON is the only cabinet in this entire set that publishes a drawer interior, so its 64.88 linear filing inches is a measured figure rather than our estimate, and it comes with a genuine interlock and soft-close ball-bearing slides at about 2.00 dollars an inch. The Staples 3-drawer vertical gives about 47.7 inches in a 14.3 in wide footprint at about 2.25 dollars an inch, which is the best value available in a narrow space.
Nobody publishes the number that matters
Every file cabinet listing tells you its drawer count. Almost none tells you how much paper it holds, and those are not the same question.
A file cabinet's real capacity is linear filing inches: the total running inches of hanging folders it accepts. Two cabinets can both be 2-drawer units and differ by a factor of two. A 2-drawer vertical at 18 in deep gives about 30 inches. A 2-drawer lateral at 35 in wide gives about 65. Same drawer count, more than double the paper.
How we compute linear filing inches
Vertical cabinet - folders hang across the narrow drawer width and file front-to-back, so capacity follows the cabinet's DEPTH.
Lateral cabinet - folders hang side-to-side on rails, so capacity follows the cabinet's WIDTH.
Usable dimension = published external dimension - 3 in shell and hardware allowance
Linear filing inches = usable dimension x number of file drawers
Cost per inch = live price / linear filing inches
The 3 in allowance is DERIVED, not assumed: the BIZOEIRON lateral is the only cabinet in our set that publishes a drawer interior, at 32.44 in inside a 35.43 in exterior, a 2.99 in difference. No vertical cabinet anywhere publishes a drawer interior, so applying the same figure to verticals is an assumption and we label it as one every time it appears.
This matters because it is also the value metric. Below is every cabinet in our set ranked by what a linear inch of filing costs, which is a different ranking from the one the prices suggest.

Our arithmetic from published external dimensions and the live price at the time of writing, using the method above. Cost per inch moves with the price; the buy buttons carry the current one. Only the BIZOEIRON figure is measured rather than estimated.
Vertical or lateral? Measure your wall
This is the first decision and it is settled by geometry rather than preference.
Vertical is 14 to 15 in wide and 18 to 26 in deep. It fits a narrow gap beside a desk, and it needs that depth again in front of it for the drawer to open.
Lateral is 28 to 36 in wide and about 16 in deep. It needs a run of wall, projects less into the room, and gives roughly double the inches per drawer.
In a small room, the floor cost is closer than it looks. A 14 in vertical with an 18 in drawer out occupies about 32 in of floor depth. A 36 in lateral with a 16 in drawer out occupies about 32 in too. The lateral is wider, the vertical is deeper, and both need roughly the same clear space in front. Full comparison on lateral vs vertical file cabinets.
The specifications worth checking
Interlock, not just a lock
A lock keeps people out. An interlock stops two drawers opening at once, which is what stops a loaded cabinet tipping forward. Paper weighs roughly 1.5 lb per linear inch, so two open lateral drawers can be over 100 lb of leverage on a 40 lb shell.
Of the cabinets here, BIZOEIRON, INTERGREAT, Greenvelly, both Letaya laterals and the DEVAISE wood cabinet publish an interlock or anti-tilt mechanism. Most of the verticals do not, which is why we recommend anchoring any 3-drawer vertical to a wall.
Drawer extension
Full extension means the drawer comes all the way out and you can reach the back file. 3/4 extension, which the NuSparc publishes honestly, means the back quarter is awkward. On a 21.72 in drawer that is 5 in of filing you will stop using, which is why our capacity figure for it is lower than its raw depth suggests.
Paper size
Letter is 8.5 by 11 in; legal is 8.5 by 14. A legal-size folder will not fit a letter-only drawer. If you hold deeds, court papers or older contracts, check for legal explicitly. The laterals here mostly take letter, legal and A4 with adjustable rails; most of the verticals are letter only.
How we ranked these
Five metrics, each 0 to 10: capacity (linear filing inches), value (cost per inch), security (lock type, interlock, anti-tip), drawerAction (glides, extension, assembled or flat-packed) and documentation (how much is published against how much is asserted). Full rubric on how we pick.

What the specs are good for
Publishes the drawer interior. It is the only cabinet here whose capacity we did not have to estimate, and that alone earns it the top spot
64.88 measured filing inches from two drawers, more than double the 2-drawer verticals
A true interlock: only one drawer opens at a time, which on a 40 lb cabinet is the thing stopping it coming over
Soft-close ball-bearing slides, specified
Takes legal as well as letter
What they are not
35.43 in wide needs a 3 ft run of clear wall, which a small room may not have
40 lb is light for a lateral, and the interlock is doing real work as a result
Only 15 units in stock at the time of writing
Assembly required
Skip this if
Skip this if you do not have 3 ft of free wall. A lateral's whole advantage is width; in a narrow space it becomes an obstruction and a vertical is the right shape.

What the specs are good for
About 99 filing inches: more than three times a standard 2-drawer vertical, in roughly the same floor area as the 2-drawer lateral
About 1.82 dollars per inch, the best value on the whole site
Interlock across all three drawers
40 in high puts the top drawer at a comfortable standing height rather than a crouch
What they are not
56 lb across three drawers is LESS weight than the 2-drawer model's 67 lb, which is an odd combination on a taller cabinet and makes the interlock essential
40 in high means it will not fit under a desk
No drawer interior and no load rating published
Three loaded lateral drawers is well over 200 lb of paper on a 56 lb shell
Skip this if
Skip this if you cannot anchor it to a wall. A 40 in cabinet weighing 56 lb that can hold 200-plus lb of paper is top-heavy by construction, and Letaya does not supply an anti-tip kit.
Who it is for. A household archive: tax years, property papers, medical records, all of it, in one cabinet.
110 lb per drawer published. Paper is heavy — roughly 1.5 lb per linear inch of files — so this is the number that tells you the slides will survive a full drawer
Two adjustable hanging rails per drawer, so you can file front-to-back as well as side-to-side
A genuine anti-tilt interlock on a 45 lb cabinet
About 2.00 dollars per filing inch
28 in wide fits a 30 in alcove, where the BIZOEIRON will not
What they are not
The "300 hanging folders" claim is implausible: 300 folders would be roughly 30 linear inches of tightly compressed paper weighing well over the drawer's own published 110 lb limit. We would ignore that number and trust the load rating
Does not publish a drawer interior, so our capacity figure is an estimate
No warranty stated
Assembly required
Skip this if
Skip this if you have the wall for the BIZOEIRON. That one publishes a measured interior and a soft-close action for the same price per inch; this one wins on the load rating and loses on everything that is actually verifiable.

Full-suspension ball-bearing drawers specified
A folding key, which sounds trivial and is the difference between keeping it on a keyring and losing it
Publishes an assembly time estimate
What they are not
The listing states 36 in width in its dimension fields and 35 in in its feature text. A 1 in discrepancy on the dimension that defines its capacity

About 2.25 dollars per filing inch: the best value per inch of any vertical cabinet here and competitive with the laterals
Fifty percent more capacity than the 2-drawer model for 9 dollars more, which is the clearest upgrade decision in this hub
Ball-bearing glides specified on all three drawers, not just the file drawer
26.8 in high still clears a standard 29 in desk apron, so it fits under a desk
What they are not
Does not publish a weight, so you cannot judge tipping risk with the top drawer loaded and open
No interlock mentioned, and a 3-drawer vertical with two drawers out is a genuine tipping hazard
No warranty stated, unlike its 2-drawer sibling's 7 years
Skip this if
Skip this if it is going somewhere a child plays. A tall narrow cabinet with no interlock and no published weight is the configuration that tips, and Staples publishes neither the weight nor an anti-tip kit for this one.

What the specs are good for
A 7-year manufacturer warranty, which is seven times longer than anything else in this hub publishes and the single strongest quality signal available here
14 in wide is the narrowest letter-size footprint in this set, so it fits beside a desk where a lateral will not
Published dimensions that are internally consistent, which sounds like a low bar and is not
28.6 lb: light enough to move alone, heavy enough not to tip when a loaded drawer is out
What they are not
About 3.30 dollars per linear filing inch, roughly 60 percent more than the lateral cabinets further down
Assembly required, where the deeper Staples model arrives built

What the specs are good for
Names ANSI/BIFMA, the actual commercial office furniture standard. It is the only cabinet on this site that cites a furniture standard at all, and that is a meaningful quality claim rather than an adjective

Hidden casters, so it reads as furniture rather than as a cart
Two box drawers for the things that are not paper, which is what a pedestal is actually for

Skip this if you are buying it to file paper. One file drawer is a drawer of current work, not an archive, and at 175 dollars the 3-drawer vertical Staples gives three times the capacity for 68 dollars.
Who it is for. A desk-side pedestal for the live stuff — stationery, chargers, this quarter's papers — built to office-furniture spec.
If you are not sure which type you need, types of filing cabinets is the orientation page, and file cabinet dimensions has every published measurement in one table so you can check against your room before buying.
FAQ
Questions people ask about this
How much paper does a file cabinet hold?+
Measured properly, in linear filing inches. A 2-drawer vertical at 18 in deep holds about 30 inches of hanging folders; a 2-drawer lateral at 35 in wide holds about 65. One linear inch is roughly 150 to 200 sheets, so a 2-drawer lateral holds somewhere around 10,000 sheets, which is more paper than most households will ever generate.
Vertical or lateral file cabinet for a home office?+
Lateral if you have about 3 ft of free wall: more inches per drawer, less projection into the room, and generally better cost per inch. Vertical if you only have a narrow gap. The two take about the same floor depth once you account for the drawer being open. Lateral vs vertical has the full comparison.
Do I need a lock on a file cabinet?+
For most home filing, the useful feature is the interlock rather than the key lock: it stops two drawers opening at once and keeps a loaded cabinet from tipping. A key lock matters if the cabinet holds anything genuinely sensitive, and locking file cabinets covers which mechanisms are worth having.
What is the difference between letter and legal size?+
Letter is 8.5 by 11 in, legal is 8.5 by 14. A legal folder does not fit a letter-only drawer. Most laterals here take letter, legal and A4 with adjustable rails; most verticals are letter only, and the listing will say.
Are metal or wood file cabinets better?+
Metal for capacity, longevity and value per inch. Wood for a room where the cabinet is visible. Wood cabinets in this price band are particleboard with a finish, which looks better and will not take water or a decade of heavy drawers the way steel does.
Should a file cabinet be anchored to the wall?+
Any cabinet over about 36 in tall with no interlock, yes. Paper is heavy and a loaded open top drawer is real leverage. Only two cabinets in our set ship an anti-tip kit, and one of those is the only tall cabinet here we would place without further hardware.

Our arithmetic: the 3 in shell allowance for filing capacity
Only one cabinet in our set publishes a drawer interior — the BIZOEIRON lateral, at 32.44 in interior inside a 35.43 in exterior, a 2.99 in difference. We round that to 3 in and apply it to every other cabinet's published external figure. It is derived from one lateral cabinet, so applying it to verticals is an assumption and we label it as one every time.
Our arithmetic: the weight of office paper
A standard letter-size banker's box holds about 2,500 sheets; 2,500 sheets of 20 lb bond weighs about 25 lb, so a full box is roughly 30 lb including the box. That works out at about 1.5 lb per linear inch of upright files. Every shelf-load and cabinet-load comparison on this site uses those figures and shows the sum.
ANSI/BIFMA office furniture standards
Cited by Staples for its mobile pedestal. It is the only furniture-standard claim anywhere in this product set, which is itself worth knowing.
