Two makers here publish a total load as well as a per-shelf figure. That is the whole ranking, because paper is heavier than shelving expects.

The short answer
Buy the Furinno 8-cube. Sixty pounds per cube and a published 540 lb total, in FSC-certified wood with a 1.2 in frame and a wall anchor in the box. It is the only shelving in our set that publishes both a per-shelf AND a total load, and at 10 dollars more than the 6-cube for two extra cubes in the same 30 in width it is also the better value. Be aware that 60 lb per cube is two boxes of paper, not three - if you are archiving rather than displaying, a storage cabinet at 180 lb a shelf is the right product.
The sum that decides whether shelving works for you
What a box of paper actually weighs
A standard letter-size banker's box holds about 2,500 sheets
2,500 sheets of 20 lb bond weighs about 25 lb
Add the box: a full banker's box is about 30 lb
Which works out at about 1.5 lb per linear inch of upright files
So a shelf rated at 30 lb holds ONE box, not three
And a 5-tier unit at 30 lb per shelf holds about 150 lb total, or five boxes across the whole unit
Our arithmetic from the paper figures in the sources. This is the sum that decides whether shelving is the right product for you, and it is why we score published load ratings separately from capacity.
Now apply it to what each unit publishes.

Cube shelving versus tiered shelving
Two different products sold in the same aisle.
Cube shelving
Fixed dividers making a grid of roughly 13.4 in squares. The cube size is the cube size and nothing taller fits, which is the main limitation: a 14 in lever-arch file standing upright does not go in one, and that is the most common thing people try.
What it buys you is rigidity. Fixed dividers and a 1.2 in frame resist the racking and sagging that kills adjustable shelving, which is why Furinno can publish 60 lb per cube and 540 lb total with a straight face. It also takes standard 13 in fabric bins, which is what makes cube shelving usable rather than a display.
Tiered shelving
Adjustable panels on a steel frame. More flexible, lighter rated. The DUMOS has 11 adjustable panels across 62.3 in of width, which is genuinely useful if what you own is a mix of heights.
The trade is load. Thirty-three pounds a shelf is one box, and the same adjustability that lets you size the bays is what lets the unit rack. Both tiered units here ship anti-tip hardware, and both need it: the NUMENN is 25.3 lb carrying a 60.4 in height.

Both Furinno units are reversible and stand tall or lie long, so one purchase fits two layouts.
The reversibility of the Furinno units is worth more than it sounds in a small room. An 8-cube standing is 30 in wide and 58 in tall; laid down it is 58 wide and 30 tall, which is a low run under a window with a usable surface on top. Same purchase, completely different piece of furniture.
How we ranked these
The hub's five metrics - capacity, load rating, footprint, build and documentation. Load rating and documentation dominate here because published load is the only thing separating shelving that holds an archive from shelving that holds books. Full rubric on how we pick.

About 2 banker's boxes per cube, from the 60 lb rating
Our arithmetic at about 30 lb per full letter-size banker's box
What the specs are good for
Two more cubes for 10 dollars, which is the clearest incremental value in this hub
540 lb total published, the highest-rated shelving here
Same 30 in width, so it takes no more floor than the 6-cube
Wall anchor included, and at 57.91 in you will use it
What they are not
57.91 in tall means the top cubes are above eye level and awkward to load
49.1 lb, and the extra height makes anchoring mandatory rather than advisable
Same fixed 13.4 in cube limitation
No doors, no lock

Skip this if the room has a sloped ceiling or a dado rail along the only free wall. The 6-cube at 43.78 in clears more obstructions and costs 10 dollars less.

About 2 banker's boxes per cube, from the 60 lb rating
Our arithmetic at about 30 lb per full letter-size banker's box
What the specs are good for
Publishes per-cube AND total load: 60 lb and 420 lb. Only Furinno does this in the shelving tier, and it is how you find out whether shelving can hold paper
A 1.2 in frame thickness published. Sagging is the failure mode of cube shelving and frame thickness is the cause
13.4 in cubes fit standard 13 in fabric bins, which is what makes cube shelving usable rather than a display
Wall-anchor kit included and FSC-certified wood
Reversible: stands tall or lies long, so one purchase fits two layouts
What they are not
Fixed dividers, so the cube size is the cube size. Nothing taller than 13.4 in goes in it
Open back means cables pass through and dust does too
60 lb per cube is two boxes of paper, not three
No lock and no doors, so everything in it is on show
Skip this if
Skip this if you need to store binders upright. A 13.4 in cube takes a letter-size box or a row of books; a 14 in lever-arch file standing up does not fit, and that is the most common thing people try to put in one.

About 1 banker's box per shelf, from the 33 lb rating
Our arithmetic at about 30 lb per full letter-size banker's box
What the specs are good for
62.3 in wide at 10.2 in deep, which is the right proportion for a wall of books in a shallow room
Eleven adjustable panels, so the bays can be sized to what you own rather than the reverse
X-braces AND adjustable foot pads AND an anti-tip kit, all included and all named
Fifty-nine dollars for 62 in of shelving
What they are not
33 lb per shelf is ONE banker's box. Put two on a shelf and you are over the rating
10.2 in deep will not take a letter-size box front-on, so the 33 lb limit is academic for paper storage
Particle board, water-resistant or not, sags under sustained load
No total load published
Skip this if
Skip this if you want to store paper. 33 lb per shelf and 10.2 in of depth together mean this is a bookcase, and buying it as archive shelving is the mistake the arithmetic at the top of this file exists to prevent.

About 1 banker's box per shelf, from the 30 lb rating
Our arithmetic at about 30 lb per full letter-size banker's box
What the specs are good for
23.6 in wide, the narrowest shelving here, for the gap beside a door or a chimney breast
Five tiers in a 2 sq ft footprint
FSC-certified wood panels on a steel frame
Anti-tilt hardware included, and at 60.4 in and 25.3 lb you need it
What they are not
30 lb per panel is the lowest rating in this hub: one box of paper, and only just
25.3 lb for a 60.4 in unit is very light, which is why the anti-tilt tool is not optional
11.81 in deep will not take a letter box front-on
No total load published
Skip this if
Skip this if the shelves will hold anything heavy. At 30 lb per panel it is a display and book unit, and a loaded top shelf on a 25 lb frame is exactly the configuration that comes forward.

Paper capacity
About 6 banker's boxes per shelf, from the 180 lb rating
Our arithmetic at about 30 lb per full letter-size banker's box
What the specs are good for
Publishes the steel gauge at 0.88 mm. Nobody else in this hub publishes a gauge, and it is what separates a cabinet from a tin box
180 lb per shelf and 900 lb total — six boxes of paper per shelf, which is the only cabinet here that can genuinely archive
A 3-point locking system rather than a single cam lock
Pre-drilled wall-anchor holes on a 72 in cabinet, and it tells you they are there
Adjustable shelves, so one tall bay for a printer and three short ones for boxes
What they are not
72 in tall and 81.79 lb empty: this is a two-person carry and a permanent decision
Shelves hold boxes, not hanging files, so it archives rather than files
No warranty stated
Ships in 1 to 2 days rather than from stock
Skip this if
Skip this if you cannot anchor it to a wall. A 72 in cabinet holding up to 900 lb on 32 in of floor is a tipping hazard by geometry, and the anchor holes exist because INTERGREAT knows it.
Who it is for. A home office that has outgrown filing and needs an archive: years of boxes, a printer bay and a lock.
We have been hard on the load figures, so here is the fair case for shelving over a cabinet.
Visible access. Everything is in sight and one reach away, which for reference material you use weekly beats a closed door every time.
Cheaper per cubic foot. The 8-cube gives you eight bays for 80 dollars; a 72 in cabinet gives you five for 118.
It does not look like office equipment. A cube unit in a spare bedroom reads as furniture. A 72 in gray steel locker does not.
Fabric bins turn it into closed storage for the parts you want hidden, for about 10 dollars a bin, and you choose which bays.
The honest summary is that shelving is right when the contents are light and used often, and a cabinet is right when they are heavy and archived. Office storage cabinet vs shelving works that through properly, and office shelving ideas covers layout.
FAQ
Questions people ask about this
How much weight can office shelving hold?+
Where it is published, 30 to 60 lb per shelf. At roughly 30 lb per full banker's box that is one to two boxes. A steel storage cabinet publishes 120 to 180 lb per shelf, which is four to six, so if you are storing paper the cabinet is the right product.
Will a banker's box fit on office shelving?+
Check the depth as well as the load. A letter-size banker's box is about 15 by 12 in, so a 10.2 in deep shelf will not take one front-on however strong it is. The 14.57 in deep cube units here will.
Is cube shelving strong enough for books?+
Yes, comfortably. Sixty pounds a cube is a full cube of books, and fixed dividers with a 1.2 in frame are what stop cube shelving sagging the way adjustable shelves do. Books are the thing it is best at.
Does office shelving need to be anchored?+
Every unit here ships an anti-tip kit and every one of them needs it. A 60.4 in unit weighing 25.3 lb with a loaded top shelf is exactly the configuration that comes forward. Fit the anchor on assembly day, not later.
What depth should office shelving be?+
At least 14 in if boxes or lever-arch files are going on it, which rules out most shallow bookcases. Ten to twelve inches is fine for paperbacks and display and will not take archive storage.

Our arithmetic: the weight of office paper
A standard letter-size banker's box holds about 2,500 sheets; 2,500 sheets of 20 lb bond weighs about 25 lb, so a full box is roughly 30 lb including the box. That works out at about 1.5 lb per linear inch of upright files. Every shelf-load and cabinet-load comparison on this site uses those figures and shows the sum.
