The short answer
Buy the INTERGREAT 72 in cabinet. It publishes 180 lb per shelf, 900 lb total AND a steel gauge of 0.88 mm, which is more hard data than anything else in this category offers. A 180 lb shelf holds about six full banker's boxes, which makes it the only cabinet here that can genuinely archive. If a 72 in cabinet is too tall for your wall, the CJF at 36 in publishes the same 180 lb per shelf for a third of the height and 34 dollars less.
Why the load rating is the whole decision
What a box of paper actually weighs
A standard letter-size banker's box holds about 2,500 sheets
2,500 sheets of 20 lb bond weighs about 25 lb
Add the box: a full banker's box is about 30 lb
Which works out at about 1.5 lb per linear inch of upright files
So a shelf rated at 30 lb holds ONE box, not three
And a 5-tier unit at 30 lb per shelf holds about 150 lb total, or five boxes across the whole unit
Our arithmetic from the paper figures in the sources. This is the sum that decides whether shelving is the right product for you, and it is why we score published load ratings separately from capacity.
Run that against what these cabinets publish and the ranking becomes obvious.

Boxes per shelf is our arithmetic at about 30 lb per full letter-size banker's box. A cabinet that publishes no load rating cannot be assessed for an archive, which is what this category is mostly bought for.
Height, and the trade nobody mentions
Three of these four are 71 to 72 in tall, which is a large permanent object in a spare bedroom. The CJF at 36 in is the interesting one for a home office.
A 36 in cabinet fits under a window, under a sloped ceiling, and along the only free wall in a converted loft. It also gives you a 32 by 16 in surface on top at a useful height. The cost is capacity: two shelves and three bays against four or five shelves and five or six bays.
A 72 in cabinet is roughly three times the storage in the same floor area, and it needs anchoring. INTERGREAT ships with two pre-drilled holes in the back panel and tells you they are there, which the others do not. A 72 in cabinet holding up to 900 lb on 32 in of floor is a tipping hazard by geometry.
Locks: the one genuinely different mechanism here
Two of these cabinets publish a 3-point locking system: a central lock driving rods into the frame at top and bottom as well as the middle. That is a meaningfully better mechanism than the single cam lock on most file cabinets, because it stops the door being levered at a corner.
INTERGREAT and Letaya both publish one, and Letaya specifies thickened steel rods. CJF publishes a high-security key lock with no further description. VINGLI says only that it has a locking system.
As with locking file cabinets, be realistic about the threat model: this is a deterrent against casual access rather than a security device. For documents whose loss would be serious, a certified fire box is the right product.
Cabinet or shelving?
The short version: a cabinet has doors and a lock, holds three to six times the weight per shelf, and costs more per cubic foot. Shelving is cheaper, lighter and open, which means everything in it is visible and dusty.
For paper, the load rating settles it. The best shelving in our set publishes 60 lb per shelf; the best cabinet publishes 180. That is two boxes against six. Office storage cabinet vs shelving has the full comparison with the arithmetic.
How we ranked these
The hub's five metrics - capacity, load rating, footprint, build and documentation - with load rating carrying unusual weight because it is both the key specification and the one most often absent. Full rubric on how we pick.

About 6 banker's boxes per shelf, from the 180 lb rating
Our arithmetic at about 30 lb per full letter-size banker's box
What the specs are good for
Publishes the steel gauge at 0.88 mm. Nobody else in this hub publishes a gauge, and it is what separates a cabinet from a tin box
180 lb per shelf and 900 lb total — six boxes of paper per shelf, which is the only cabinet here that can genuinely archive
A 3-point locking system rather than a single cam lock
Pre-drilled wall-anchor holes on a 72 in cabinet, and it tells you they are there
Adjustable shelves, so one tall bay for a printer and three short ones for boxes
What they are not
72 in tall and 81.79 lb empty: this is a two-person carry and a permanent decision
Shelves hold boxes, not hanging files, so it archives rather than files
No warranty stated
Ships in 1 to 2 days rather than from stock
Skip this if
Skip this if you cannot anchor it to a wall. A 72 in cabinet holding up to 900 lb on 32 in of floor is a tipping hazard by geometry, and the anchor holes exist because INTERGREAT knows it.
Who it is for. A home office that has outgrown filing and needs an archive: years of boxes, a printer bay and a lock.

Paper capacity
About 6 banker's boxes per shelf, from the 180 lb rating
Our arithmetic at about 30 lb per full letter-size banker's box
What the specs are good for
180 lb per shelf, matching the 72 in INTERGREAT, in a cabinet half the height and a third of the price
36 in high fits under a window or a sloped ceiling, where a 71 in cabinet cannot go
A usable 36 in work surface on top at standing-desk-ish height
Shock-absorbing feet, which protects both the floor and a wobbly cabinet
No wall anchor needed at this height and weight
What they are not
Two shelves only, so three bays total. Capacity is a third of the tall cabinets
46 lb empty with 360 lb of rated shelf capacity, which is a lot of load on a light shell
Single key lock rather than a 3-point system
No total load published, only the per-shelf figure
Skip this if
Skip this if you need volume. Three bays is roughly 18 boxes at the published rating, and if that is enough the cabinet is excellent; if it is not, the 72 in version is the only answer.
Who it is for. A room with a window, a radiator or a sloped ceiling along the only free wall.
Five adjustable shelves making six levels, a welded deluxe frame with steel-barred doors, and a published 120 lb per shelf.

Paper capacity
About 4 banker's boxes per shelf, from the 120 lb rating
Our arithmetic at about 30 lb per full letter-size banker's box
What the specs are good for
Six levels rather than five, which in a 71 in cabinet means shorter bays and less wasted air
A WELDED frame, stated, where most cabinets in this class are bolted panels
Doors reinforced with additional steel bars, which is where a cheap cabinet flexes and rattles
3-point lock with thickened rods
Packed with foam and reinforced metal corners, which Letaya calls out and which matters on an 80 lb flat-pack
What they are not
120 lb per shelf against the INTERGREAT's 180 lb, at 27 dollars more
Does not publish a total load, only the per-shelf figure
No steel gauge published
No wall-anchor provision mentioned on a 71 in cabinet
Skip this if
Skip this if you are archiving heavy paper. 120 lb per shelf is four boxes; the INTERGREAT's 180 lb is six, for less money, and that is the whole job of an archive cabinet.
Who it is for. Storage of many light things rather than a few heavy ones: supplies, equipment, stationery stock.

What the specs are good for
106 dollars for 71 in of lockable steel, the cheapest tall cabinet here
73 lb, within a pound or two of the two better-documented cabinets, so the steel is comparable
Five adjustable shelves
Wipe-clean black finish
What they are not
No load rating of any kind, per shelf or total. On a storage cabinet that is the specification
Does not say what kind of lock it has
No steel gauge
No wall-anchor provision mentioned
Skip this if
Skip this if you intend to put anything heavy on the shelves, which is to say skip it for an archive. The INTERGREAT is 12 dollars more and publishes 180 lb per shelf and a 900 lb total, which is 12 dollars well spent.
Who it is for. Light storage on the tightest budget, where the lock matters more than the load.
01Measure the wall height, including any coving, sloped ceiling or pipe boxing. A 72 in cabinet does not go under a 70 in eave.
02Check you can anchor it. Two of these are 71 in or taller and only one publishes wall-fixing provision.
03Plan the carry. These are 46 to 82 lb flat-packed, in boxes long enough to be awkward on a staircase.
04Decide whether you want a surface on top. At 36 in you get a usable one; at 72 in you get a high shelf you will need a stool to reach.
FAQ
Questions people ask about this
How much weight can an office storage cabinet shelf hold?+
Where it is published, 120 to 180 lb per shelf. At roughly 30 lb per full banker's box, 180 lb is about six boxes and 120 lb is about four. One cabinet in our set publishes no load rating at all, which on a storage product is the specification going missing.
Should a tall storage cabinet be anchored to the wall?+
Yes. A 72 in cabinet rated to 900 lb standing on 32 in of floor is a tipping hazard by geometry. INTERGREAT ships pre-drilled holes in the back panel for exactly this; the others do not mention wall fixing at all.
What is a 3-point lock?+
A central lock that drives rods into the frame at the top and bottom of the door as well as the middle, so the door cannot be levered at a corner. It is a meaningfully better mechanism than the single cam lock on most file cabinets, and two of these four publish one.
Storage cabinet or shelving for an office?+
Cabinet if you are storing paper, want it out of sight, or want a lock: three to six times the load per shelf. Shelving if the contents are light, you want them visible, and the budget is tighter. Cabinet vs shelving has the arithmetic.
Will a storage cabinet fit under a window?+
A 36 in cabinet usually will and a 71 in one will not. The shorter format is the useful one in a converted loft, under a sloped ceiling, or along a wall with a radiator, and it gives you a usable surface on top.

Our arithmetic: the weight of office paper
A standard letter-size banker's box holds about 2,500 sheets; 2,500 sheets of 20 lb bond weighs about 25 lb, so a full box is roughly 30 lb including the box. That works out at about 1.5 lb per linear inch of upright files. Every shelf-load and cabinet-load comparison on this site uses those figures and shows the sum.
