The spec that decides whether a clamp-on panel is usable at all is the desktop thickness it accepts, and most sellers do not publish it.

The short answer
Measure your desktop thickness before you buy anything on this page. A clamp-on panel that does not seat properly is a panel on the floor, and the range each clamp accepts is the spec that decides it. VIVO publishes 0.4 to 1.4 in across its whole line, Yaomiao publishes 3/4 to 2 in, OBEX publishes 1.5 to 2.5 in for cubicle walls - and several sellers publish nothing. The VIVO PP-1-V060G is our pick because it publishes its range, mounts above or below the desk, and ships cable spacers so the clamp does not fight your cable tray.
If you do not want to clamp anything to your furniture, the Keemute 3-panel stands freely on the desktop with a polyester fiber core and costs a third as much. That is the other honest answer here.
The two mounting styles, and why it matters
Clamp-on
Grips the desk edge, mounts above the surface as a screen or below it as a modesty panel, and costs you zero desk depth. It is the tidier solution and it is conditional on three things: a free front edge, a desktop within the clamp's range, and a flat edge profile. A bullnose or beveled front edge will not seat a flat clamp properly regardless of thickness.
Freestanding
Sits on the desktop on feet. No compatibility question, no marks on the furniture, works in a rental or a shared office where you are not allowed to modify anything. The cost is desk depth: three panels standing at the back eat 2 to 3 in, and on a 24 in deep desk that is the difference between a keyboard fitting comfortably and not.

A desk with a bullnose or beveled front edge may not take a flat clamp even within the published range. Measure the flat part of the edge, not the thickest point.
What these panels actually do
A desk screen does two things, and it is worth being clear about the balance.
Visual separation, strongly. It stops the person at the next desk seeing your screen, and it stops your camera seeing the rest of the room. That works completely and is the reason most of these are bought.
Acoustic improvement, modestly. The panels with a felt or polyester core absorb the immediate reflections between you, your desk surface and your screen, which genuinely improves what a microphone picks up. None of the products here publishes an absorption figure, so the honest version is: there is absorbing material, it is close to your mouth and your microphone, and that is the position where a small amount of material does the most good. We cover the limits properly on do desk privacy panels reduce noise.
Coverage: where the panel should actually be
The instinct is to screen the front of the desk. That is right if you are on camera and wrong if the problem is the person beside you.
On camera, open room behind you - a wide front panel. The VIVO 71 in covers a standard 72 in desk end to end with no overhang.
Two desks side by side - side panels, not a front one. Two VIVO 24 in squares cost about the same as one 71 in panel and screen the flanks, which is where the problem is.
One desk, want it enclosed - the Yaomiao 3-piece set gives a front panel and two sides in one purchase, which is the configuration most single desks actually need.
Below the desk is visible on camera - a modesty panel. That is what the OBEX acrylic and the flipped ERGO COLLECT panel are for.
How we ranked these
The hub's five metrics - coverage, acoustic, stability, mobility and documentation - with documentation carrying unusual weight here because the clamp range is both the critical spec and the one most often missing. Full rubric on how we pick.

VIVO describes "sound-reducing material" but publishes no NRC or coefficient

What the specs are good for
Publishes the desk-thickness range it fits, which is the one spec that decides whether a clamp-on panel is usable at all
Mounts below the desk as a modesty panel as well as above it as a screen
Cable spacers in the box, so the clamp does not fight your cable tray
Tackable surface at eye level is genuinely useful desk real estate
What they are not
150 dollars for 10 sq ft of panel: the most expensive desk screen per square foot here
No published absorption figure despite a sound-reducing claim
Clamp-on only works on a desk with a free front edge; a desk against a wall on three sides limits placement
Skip this if
Skip this if your desktop is thicker than 1.4 in or has a bullnose or beveled front edge. VIVO publishes the range precisely so you can check, and a clamp that does not seat properly is a panel on the floor.
Who it is for. A desk in a shared room, where the screen has to look like office equipment rather than a craft project.

What the specs are good for
11 in wider than the 60 in model for 10 dollars, which is the best incremental value in this group
Covers the full width of a standard 72 in desk with no overhang either side
Same documented clamp range and the same below-desk option
What they are not
18.15 lb cantilevered off a desk edge is real load; a flimsy desktop will flex
No published absorption figure
Sold as a system in the listing copy but shipped as a single panel
Skip this if
Skip this if your desk is under about 60 in wide. The panel will overhang the ends, which looks wrong and puts the clamps in from the corners where the desktop is least supported.
Who it is for. A 72 in desk that needs the whole front edge screened.
Absence confirmed against the published specification
What the specs are good for
Polyester fiber core, so it is in the absorbing tier rather than the visual-screen tier
No clamp means no desk-thickness compatibility question and no marks on the desktop
Three panels wrap a corner, which a single flat screen cannot
56 dollars, about a third of the VIVO clamp-on
What they are not
No published absorption figure
Freestanding on a desk means it gets knocked, and it has no mass to resist that
Takes up desk depth at the back, which a clamp-on panel does not
Skip this if
Skip this if your desk is shallow. Three panels standing on the surface eat 2 to 3 in of usable depth, and on a 24 in desk that is the difference between a keyboard fitting and not.
Who it is for. A renter, a shared desk, or anyone who does not want to clamp anything to the furniture.

Described as acoustical design for noise reduction; no NRC published
Absence confirmed against the published specification
What the specs are good for
PET, which is an actual absorbing material rather than a woven fabric over a frame
Publishes its bracket range AND tells you the part number family to use if your wall is thicker, which almost nobody does
Eight widths and three heights, so you can match a real cubicle rather than approximate it
Installs without dismantling the existing partition
What they are not
No published NRC despite the acoustical framing
Needs an existing cubicle or panel wall; it cannot clamp to a plain desktop
89 dollars for 5.25 sq ft
Skip this if
Skip this if you do not already have a partition wall to mount it on. This is a cubicle accessory, and in a spare bedroom there is nothing for the brackets to grip.
Who it is for. A home office that inherited real office furniture, or a shared workspace with existing panel walls.

What the specs are good for
Six panels for 30 dollars, which is five dollars a panel for a real polyester absorber
Publishes a thickness, which the more expensive desk screens here mostly do not
Disassembles into a flat stack for storage
Enough panels to screen two desks or wrap one on three sides
What they are not
No published absorption figure
0.35 in is thin; it works on immediate reflections and speech spill, not on room noise
Six separate panels on feet is six things to knock over
Skip this if
Skip this if you want one tidy screen. Six small freestanding panels is a fiddly desk, and if you only need the front of one desk the Keemute 3-panel is a cleaner object.
Who it is for. Two people sharing a room, or a desk that needs screening on more than one side cheaply.

None. Acrylic is a reflector, not an absorber, and no acoustic claim is made

What the specs are good for
1/4 in acrylic on anodized aluminum is a genuinely solid object, not a fabric panel
Frosted finish screens the lower half of a video frame while still passing daylight
Rounded corners and impact-proof acrylic, which matters at shin height
Makes no acoustic claim at all
What they are not
Acrylic reflects sound. If anything it makes the immediate acoustics marginally worse, not better
72 dollars for a modesty panel
Shows fingerprints and dust on a frosted surface
Skip this if
Skip this if you want anything acoustic. It is on this page because 'desk privacy panel' returns it constantly and buyers should know what it is: a visual barrier below the desktop, nothing more.
Who it is for. A desk filmed from the front where the under-desk view is the problem.
The ones with a felt or polyester core absorb immediate reflections between you, the desk and your screen, which improves what a microphone picks up more than the small amount of material suggests. None publishes an absorption figure, and none blocks sound from elsewhere in the room. Do desk privacy panels reduce noise covers it properly.
What desk thickness do clamp-on panels fit?+
It varies by product and it is the spec that decides compatibility. VIVO publishes 0.4 to 1.4 in, Yaomiao publishes 3/4 to 2 in, and OBEX cubicle brackets are for 1.5 to 2.5 in partition walls. Measure the flat part of your desk edge before buying, and note that a bullnose or beveled edge may not seat a flat clamp at all.
Freestanding or clamp-on: which is better?+
Clamp-on if you own the desk and it has a free, flat front edge: it costs no desk depth and looks tidier. Freestanding if you rent, share, or do not want to modify the furniture. The cost of freestanding is 2 to 3 in of desk depth at the back.
Can a desk privacy panel be used as a modesty panel?+
Several are designed for it. The VIVO panels mount above or below the desktop, and the ERGO COLLECT L-shaped panels flip over to become a desk skirt. The OBEX acrylic panel is a modesty panel specifically and is not acoustic.
Will a desk panel block my colleague from hearing me?+
No, and nothing at this price will. A desk screen interrupts the direct path and absorbs the first reflections, which takes the edge off. Making a conversation genuinely private needs an enclosure, which is what office pods are and why they cost what they do.
