Neither of the products people compare here is actually a filing cabinet, and understanding why settles the question quickly.

The short answer
Buy a certified fire box for the documents that cannot be replaced, and a normal filing cabinet for everything else. They are not alternatives. A SentrySafe fire box costs about 8.62 dollars per linear filing inch; a BIZOEIRON lateral costs about 2.00. You are paying four times over for certified fire and water protection, and you should pay it for a passport, a birth certificate, a deed and an insurance policy. You should not pay it for seven years of utility bills.
The thing almost nobody notices
Neither product in this comparison is a filing cabinet. A fireproof filing cabinet - a full-size, multi-drawer, fire-rated cabinet - is a commercial product that typically costs 1,500 to 4,000 dollars, weighs 500 to 800 lb, and is not what comes up when you search the term.
What comes up, and what we are comparing here, is a fire box: a 14 to 17 in cube with a lid, which holds hanging folders and weighs about 40 lb. It is a good product. It is not a cabinet, and the moment you see it that way the comparison stops being confusing.
What certification actually means
This is the one place in this whole site where genuine third-party verification exists, and it is worth taking seriously because almost nothing else in our product set has any.

Nothing
From SentrySafe's own published specifications, 2026-10-03. Note the larger box publishes a temperature and a submersion duration where the smaller one publishes only durations: 32 dollars buys you the data as well as the volume.
Two things to understand about those figures. Half an hour at 1550F is the entry-level fire rating. One-hour and two-hour ratings exist at higher prices. Half an hour is calibrated to a typical domestic fire being brought under control, not to a prolonged structural fire.
The water rating matters more than people expect, and it is the reason the ETL verification is worth having. Fires get put out with water. A box that survives the fire and then sits in several inches of it has not done its job, which is why SentrySafe publishes 72 hours of submersion alongside the fire figure.
Cost per inch, which is where the decision lives
What certified protection costs per inch of paper
SentrySafe 0.66 cu ft: interior depth 11.6 in = about 11.6 linear filing inches
At the live price shown: about 8.62 dollars per inch
BIZOEIRON lateral: 64.88 measured linear filing inches
At the live price shown: about 2.00 dollars per inch
The premium for certification: about 4.3 times
Our arithmetic from SentrySafe's published interior dimensions and the live prices at the time of writing. Cost per inch moves with price; the buy buttons carry the current figure.
Four times the price per inch is exactly why the answer is both products rather than one. Twelve inches of certified storage holds every irreplaceable document a household owns, several times over. Paying four times over for the other 50 inches of utility bills and bank statements is money spent on nothing.

A practical sorting, not legal advice. If a document's loss would mean a government office and a six-week wait, it belongs in the box.
The useful rule: scan everything, store the scans off-site, and put only the documents whose ORIGINALS matter in the box. That usually turns out to be fewer than twenty sheets, which fits in the smaller SentrySafe with room spare.

What the specs are good for
UL Classified AND ETL Verified: two named third-party certifications with stated durations and a stated temperature. Nothing else on this site is certified by anyone
Publishes interior dimensions as well as exterior, so you know what fits
Takes letter-size hanging files, so the papers stay organized rather than loose
Carrying handles, which matters because the point of a fire box is that you can also take it with you
41 lb in a box this size is the fire lining doing its job
What they are not
About 11.6 filing inches for 100 dollars, which is 8.62 dollars per inch and the most expensive storage on this site by a factor of four
Half an hour at 1550F is the entry-level fire rating; 1-hour and 2-hour ratings exist at higher prices
41 lb for 0.66 cubic feet is heavy to move, handles notwithstanding
It is a box, not a cabinet. It does not replace a filing cabinet and should not be bought as one
Skip this if
Skip this if you are trying to store your filing. This holds a passport, birth certificates, the deeds and the insurance policy. Everything else belongs in a cabinet that costs a tenth as much per inch, which is the entire point of our fireproof-versus-safe comparison.
Who it is for. Everyone, alongside a filing cabinet. The documents that cannot be replaced belong in something certified, and the rest do not.

What the specs are good for
Publishes the drawer interior. It is the only cabinet here whose capacity we did not have to estimate, and that alone earns it the top spot
64.88 measured filing inches from two drawers, more than double the 2-drawer verticals
A true interlock: only one drawer opens at a time, which on a 40 lb cabinet is the thing stopping it coming over
Soft-close ball-bearing slides, specified
Takes legal as well as letter
What they are not
35.43 in wide needs a 3 ft run of clear wall, which a small room may not have
40 lb is light for a lateral, and the interlock is doing real work as a result
Only 15 units in stock at the time of writing
Assembly required
Skip this if
Skip this if you do not have 3 ft of free wall. A lateral's whole advantage is width; in a narrow space it becomes an obstruction and a vertical is the right shape.

What the specs are good for
Three separately locking drawers, which is the right design if the cabinet is shared and only one drawer is yours
An anti-tip kit actually included, on a 40.6 in cabinet. It is the only tall cabinet here that ships one
Adjustable rails in all three drawers, so each can be set for A4 or letter independently
All three are file drawers, not two files and a stationery tray
What they are not
Three separate locks means three keys to keep track of
Particleboard at 40.6 in tall carrying three drawers of paper is the construction most likely to sag at the drawer bottoms over years
About 2.62 dollars per filing inch, mid-pack
Does not take legal size
Skip this if
Skip this if two people will use it and both want everything locked. Three separate locks is a feature for separate contents and a nuisance for shared ones.
Who it is for. A shared study where one drawer is private, in a room where black board furniture fits.
They exist and they are a serious product: multi-drawer, fire-rated as an assembly, typically 1,500 to 4,000 dollars and 500 to 800 lb. They are not sold through the channels this site covers and we have none to rank.
For a household they are almost always the wrong purchase. The volume of paper whose loss would be genuinely serious is small, and a 100-dollar certified box plus a 130-dollar normal cabinet covers the same ground for a tenth of the money. If you are running a business with regulatory record-keeping obligations, that calculation is different and you should talk to a commercial supplier rather than read a consumer site.
A certified fire BOX is, for the small number of documents whose originals matter. A full fireproof filing cabinet at 1,500 to 4,000 dollars is almost always the wrong purchase for a household: a 100-dollar box plus a normal cabinet covers the same need for a tenth of the cost.
Does a locking file cabinet protect against fire?+
No, not at all. A key lock and 0.8 mm steel offer no fire resistance. A standard file cabinet in a house fire loses everything in it. Fire protection requires an insulated, certified enclosure, which is a different product.
What does UL Classified mean on a fire box?+
That an independent laboratory tested the product against a defined fire exposure. SentrySafe publishes half an hour at 1550F for the box here, which is the entry-level rating; one-hour and two-hour ratings exist at higher prices. The rating is a tested result rather than a manufacturer's claim.
Why does a fire box need a water rating?+
Because fires are put out with water. A box that survives the fire and then sits in several inches of water has not protected anything. SentrySafe publishes an ETL Verification for 72 hours of submersion alongside the fire figure, and it is the half people overlook.
What should go in a fire box?+
Documents whose ORIGINALS matter and whose replacement means an institution and a wait: passports, birth certificates, deeds, wills, insurance policies, vehicle titles. Scan everything else and keep the scans off-site. For most households that is under twenty sheets.
How much does a fire box hold?+
The SentrySafe 0.66 cubic foot box has a published interior of 12 by 11.6 by 8.1 in, which is about 11.6 linear filing inches and takes letter-size hanging folders. That is a lot for irreplaceable originals and very little for general filing.

UL Classification and ETL Verification, as cited by SentrySafe
SentrySafe publishes a UL Classification for fire endurance and an ETL Verification for water submersion, each with a stated duration. We quote their published durations and temperatures and have verified nothing ourselves.
Our arithmetic: the 3 in shell allowance for filing capacity
Only one cabinet in our set publishes a drawer interior — the BIZOEIRON lateral, at 32.44 in interior inside a 35.43 in exterior, a 2.99 in difference. We round that to 3 in and apply it to every other cabinet's published external figure. It is derived from one lateral cabinet, so applying it to verticals is an assumption and we label it as one every time.
