File Cabinets

Lateral vs vertical: which file cabinet fits your room?

The surprise in this comparison is that both take about the same floor depth once the drawer is open. The difference is which direction the wall runs.

The short answer

If you have about 3 ft of clear wall, buy lateral. If you only have a narrow gap, buy vertical. That is genuinely the whole decision, because once you account for the drawer being open the two formats need almost identical floor depth - about 32 in each - and the lateral gives roughly double the filing inches per drawer. The common belief that vertical cabinets save space is a measurement of the closed cabinet, and you do not use a closed cabinet.

The floor space arithmetic people get wrong

A vertical cabinet is 14 in wide and 18 in deep, which looks like a smaller object than a 36 by 16 in lateral. In a catalog photograph it is. In a room it is not, because a filing cabinet's footprint is its body plus its open drawer plus somewhere for you to stand.

Floor depth in use, both formats

Vertical, 18 in deep: body 18 in + drawer extension about 14 in = about 32 in of floor depth

Lateral, 16 in deep: body 16 in + drawer extension about 16 in = about 32 in of floor depth

Vertical wall width needed: about 14 in

Lateral wall width needed: 28 to 36 in

Vertical capacity, 2 drawers: about 30 linear filing inches

Lateral capacity, 2 drawers: about 50 to 66 linear filing inches

Drawer extension figures assume full-extension slides, which both formats commonly publish. Our arithmetic from the published external dimensions in our product set.

So the trade is wall width against filing capacity, and the floor depth is a wash. If the wall is there, lateral is simply more cabinet for the same floor.

From the published specifications in our product set, 2026-10-03.

Four things that are genuinely better about lateral

  1. 01Capacity per drawer, by roughly a factor of two. This is the headline and it holds across every price point.
  2. 02Interlocks. Every lateral in our set publishes an interlock or anti-tilt mechanism. None of the steel verticals does. Given that a loaded drawer is about 48 lb, that is a real safety difference.
  3. 03Paper size flexibility. Laterals mostly take letter, legal and A4 on adjustable rails. Verticals are mostly letter only.
  4. 04A usable top. A 36 in wide surface at 29 in high is a printer station. A 14 in wide one is a place for a plant.

Three things that are genuinely better about vertical

  1. 01It fits where a lateral cannot. A 14 in gap beside a desk, between a door and a window, in an alcove. This is the whole case and it is often decisive.
  2. 02It goes under a desk. Most 2-drawer verticals are 24 to 25 in tall and clear a standard apron. Only one lateral in our set does.
  3. 03The cheapest cost per inch on the site is a vertical. The SISESOL at about 1.34 dollars an inch beats every lateral here, because the budget end of the vertical market is more competitive.

The decision, in four questions

  1. 01Do you have 28 in of clear wall, measured including skirting and pipework? No, buy vertical and stop here.
  2. 02Does the cabinet need to go under a desk? Yes, buy vertical. Only one lateral in our set clears an apron.
  3. 03Do you hold legal-size paper? Yes, lean lateral. Most verticals are letter only.
  4. 04Is anyone small in the house? Lean lateral for the interlock, or buy a vertical and anchor it.

What the specs are good for

  • Publishes the drawer interior. It is the only cabinet here whose capacity we did not have to estimate, and that alone earns it the top spot
  • 64.88 measured filing inches from two drawers, more than double the 2-drawer verticals
  • A true interlock: only one drawer opens at a time, which on a 40 lb cabinet is the thing stopping it coming over
  • Soft-close ball-bearing slides, specified
  • Takes legal as well as letter

What they are not

  • 35.43 in wide needs a 3 ft run of clear wall, which a small room may not have
  • 40 lb is light for a lateral, and the interlock is doing real work as a result
  • Only 15 units in stock at the time of writing
  • Assembly required

Skip this if

Skip this if you do not have 3 ft of free wall. A lateral's whole advantage is width; in a narrow space it becomes an obstruction and a vertical is the right shape.

Who it is for. Anyone with a wall and more than a couple of years of paper. This is the cabinet we would buy.

02/Staples

3-Drawer Vertical File Cabinet, Letter

Best value in verticals

Staples 3-Drawer Vertical File Cabinet, Letter

Three drawers on ball-bearing glides in a 26.8 in high cabinet, at about 2.24 dollars per filing inch. The cheapest real capacity in this hub.

Published specification
Dimensions26.8 in high x 14.3 in wide x 18.9 in deepStaples published specification

LockBuilt-in keyed lockStaples published specification
CapacityLetter size hanging filesStaples published specification
AssemblyPartially assembledStaples published specification

What the specs are good for

  • About 2.25 dollars per filing inch: the best value per inch of any vertical cabinet here and competitive with the laterals
  • Fifty percent more capacity than the 2-drawer model for 9 dollars more, which is the clearest upgrade decision in this hub
  • Ball-bearing glides specified on all three drawers, not just the file drawer
  • 26.8 in high still clears a standard 29 in desk apron, so it fits under a desk

What they are not

  • Does not publish a weight, so you cannot judge tipping risk with the top drawer loaded and open
  • No interlock mentioned, and a 3-drawer vertical with two drawers out is a genuine tipping hazard
  • No warranty stated, unlike its 2-drawer sibling's 7 years

Skip this if

Skip this if it is going somewhere a child plays. A tall narrow cabinet with no interlock and no published weight is the configuration that tips, and Staples publishes neither the weight nor an anti-tip kit for this one.

Who it is for. Someone with a few years of paper who wants the cheapest honest capacity and has a wall to put it against.

Letaya 3-Drawer Lateral File Cabinet, 36 in Wide (AA1)

LockBuilt-in interlock securing all drawers; folding keyLetaya published specification
Hanging barAdjustable, takes A4, letter or legalLetaya published specification

What the specs are good for

  • About 99 filing inches: more than three times a standard 2-drawer vertical, in roughly the same floor area as the 2-drawer lateral
  • About 1.82 dollars per inch, the best value on the whole site
  • Interlock across all three drawers
  • 40 in high puts the top drawer at a comfortable standing height rather than a crouch

What they are not

  • 56 lb across three drawers is LESS weight than the 2-drawer model's 67 lb, which is an odd combination on a taller cabinet and makes the interlock essential
  • 40 in high means it will not fit under a desk
  • No drawer interior and no load rating published
  • Three loaded lateral drawers is well over 200 lb of paper on a 56 lb shell

Skip this if

Skip this if you cannot anchor it to a wall. A 40 in cabinet weighing 56 lb that can hold 200-plus lb of paper is top-heavy by construction, and Letaya does not supply an anti-tip kit.

Who it is for. A household archive: tax years, property papers, medical records, all of it, in one cabinet.

SISESOL 2-Drawer Narrow Vertical File Cabinet

Forty dollars, 51 lb of steel, a 120 lb published top load, and it takes letter, legal and A4. The budget pick with real numbers.

What the specs are good for

  • About 1.34 dollars per filing inch, by far the cheapest capacity anywhere in this hub
  • Publishes a 120 lb top load, so you know whether a printer can sit on it. Hardly anyone publishes this
  • 51 lb of steel in a 40-dollar cabinet: nearly double the weight of the Staples letter cabinet at less than half the price
  • Takes legal AND A4 as well as letter, and names all three
  • Names the actual coating process rather than saying powder-coated

What they are not

  • No interlock and no anti-tip hardware mentioned
  • No warranty stated
  • "Deep and silent" is the only description of the drawer action; no glide type is named
  • Assembly required, with the instructions on a product page video rather than in the box

Skip this if

Skip this if the drawer action matters to you. SISESOL publishes the shell, the coating and the load but says nothing about what the drawers run on, and at this price they are unlikely to be ball-bearing full-extension.

Who it is for. Anyone who needs a lockable steel cabinet this month for the least money, and will accept an unknown drawer mechanism.

Where to go from here

If the answer is lateral: best lateral file cabinets, where the load ratings and interlocks are compared. If it is vertical: best vertical file cabinets, which includes the best value per inch on the site. For every published measurement in one table before you decide: file cabinet dimensions. And if neither format is obviously right, types of filing cabinets covers the whole category including the formats this page does not.

FAQ

Questions people ask about this

Is a lateral file cabinet better than a vertical?
For capacity, yes: roughly double the filing inches per drawer. For fitting a narrow gap, no. Both need about 32 in of floor depth once the drawer is open, so the real trade is wall width against capacity rather than one being more space-efficient.
Does a lateral file cabinet take up more space?
More wall width, the same floor depth. A 36 in lateral needs 3 ft of wall; a 14 in vertical needs just over a foot. But a vertical's greater depth means both occupy about 32 in of floor once the drawer is out.
Which holds more, lateral or vertical?
Lateral, by roughly a factor of two per drawer. A 36 in lateral drawer gives about 33 linear filing inches; an 18 in deep vertical drawer gives about 15. Same drawer, double the paper.
Can a lateral file cabinet fit under a desk?
Rarely. Most are 28.4 to 29 in tall against a standard 29 in apron, before you account for carpet. One cabinet in our set, the Letaya compact at 27.95 in, is designed for it.
Are lateral file cabinets more expensive?
Per cabinet, usually. Per linear filing inch, usually not: laterals cluster around 1.82 to 2.10 dollars an inch while verticals range from 1.34 to 4.04. The cheapest inch on the site is a budget vertical; the cheapest large capacity is a lateral.

Where these numbers came from

We have not handled any of these products. Every figure on this page is either the manufacturer's own published specification, named as such, or our arithmetic from those figures, shown so you can check it. Prices come from Amazon through our price layer and carry the date they were verified.

  1. Amazon product listings, retrieved 2026-10-03

Published specifications, dimensions, materials and manufacturer claims were read from each product's own listing data. Prices and availability refresh daily and carry their verification date on the page.

  2. Felt & File methodology

The full published method, and an explicit statement of what a specs-only approach cannot tell you.

  3. Our arithmetic: the 3 in shell allowance for filing capacity

Only one cabinet in our set publishes a drawer interior — the BIZOEIRON lateral, at 32.44 in interior inside a 35.43 in exterior, a 2.99 in difference. We round that to 3 in and apply it to every other cabinet's published external figure. It is derived from one lateral cabinet, so applying it to verticals is an assumption and we label it as one every time.

  4. Our arithmetic: the weight of office paper

A standard letter-size banker's box holds about 2,500 sheets; 2,500 sheets of 20 lb bond weighs about 25 lb, so a full box is roughly 30 lb including the box. That works out at about 1.5 lb per linear inch of upright files. Every shelf-load and cabinet-load comparison on this site uses those figures and shows the sum.
