Roughly double the filing inches per drawer of a vertical, for about the same floor depth once the drawer is open. The catch is the wall.

The short answer
Buy the BIZOEIRON 2-drawer lateral. It is the only cabinet anywhere in our set that publishes its drawer interior - 32.44 in wide, 13.98 in deep, 9.8 in high - which means 64.88 linear filing inches is a measured number rather than our estimate. It also has a real central interlock where only one drawer opens at a time, soft-close ball-bearing slides, and takes letter and legal. If you need the most capacity available, the Letaya 3-drawer at about 99 inches and 1.82 dollars an inch is the best value on the site.
Why lateral wins on capacity
In a lateral cabinet, folders hang side to side on rails running the width of the drawer. Capacity follows the cabinet's width. A 35 in wide drawer gives about 32 usable inches of filing; an 18 in deep vertical drawer gives about 15.
How we compute linear filing inches
Vertical cabinet - folders hang across the narrow drawer width and file front-to-back, so capacity follows the cabinet's DEPTH.
Lateral cabinet - folders hang side-to-side on rails, so capacity follows the cabinet's WIDTH.
Usable dimension = published external dimension - 3 in shell and hardware allowance
Linear filing inches = usable dimension x number of file drawers
Cost per inch = live price / linear filing inches
The 3 in allowance is DERIVED, not assumed: the BIZOEIRON lateral is the only cabinet in our set that publishes a drawer interior, at 32.44 in inside a 35.43 in exterior, a 2.99 in difference. No vertical cabinet anywhere publishes a drawer interior, so applying the same figure to verticals is an assumption and we label it as one every time it appears.
Note the one real caveat: some laterals use front-to-back rails instead, in which case capacity follows depth and the advantage disappears. Greenvelly explicitly publishes side-to-side rails, and INTERGREAT publishes two adjustable rails per drawer so you can file either way. Several listings do not say, and it changes the capacity completely.
Load ratings, and why they matter here specifically
Paper is heavier than people expect. A full letter-size banker's box is about 30 lb, which works out at roughly 1.5 lb per linear inch of upright files.
What a full lateral drawer actually weighs
A 35 in lateral drawer holds about 32 linear inches of files
32 inches x 1.5 lb per inch = about 48 lb per drawer
A 3-drawer lateral, fully loaded = about 144 lb of paper
On a cabinet whose own shell weighs 40 to 67 lb
Our arithmetic from the paper-weight figures in the sources. This is why the interlock matters and why the published drawer load is worth reading.
INTERGREAT publishes 110 lb per drawer and 220 lb total, which is comfortably above what paper will ever do to it. Greenvelly publishes about 220 lb maximum. Nobody else here publishes a load rating at all.
One figure we would ignore: INTERGREAT also claims up to 300 hanging folders per drawer. Three hundred folders is roughly 30 linear inches of tightly compressed paper weighing well over the drawer's own published 110 lb limit. The load rating is the credible number and the folder count is marketing.
The interlock is the safety feature
A 3-drawer lateral with two loaded drawers open is roughly 96 lb of paper hanging 16 in in front of a 56 lb cabinet. That is a tipping hazard by arithmetic rather than by opinion.
Every lateral here publishes an interlock or anti-tilt mechanism, which is to the category's credit and a genuine difference from the verticals. BIZOEIRON states only one drawer can open at a time; INTERGREAT, Greenvelly and all three Letayas describe interlock systems with anti-tilt.
Wall width, and the one measurement to take first
A lateral needs a run of clear wall and that is the constraint that rules it out.

Measure the clear wall including any skirting board, radiator pipe or door architrave. Our figures use the method above.
One height note worth having: the Letaya compact 2-drawer at 27.95 in is the only lateral here that clears a standard 29 in desk apron, so it is the only one that goes under a desk. Everything else stands against a wall and gives you a usable surface on top.
How we ranked these
The hub's five metrics - capacity, value, security, drawer action and documentation. Documentation carries real weight here because exactly one cabinet publishes a drawer interior and exactly two publish a load rating, and those absences are the difference between a measurement and an estimate. What the specs are good for
Publishes the drawer interior. It is the only cabinet here whose capacity we did not have to estimate, and that alone earns it the top spot
64.88 measured filing inches from two drawers, more than double the 2-drawer verticals
A true interlock: only one drawer opens at a time, which on a 40 lb cabinet is the thing stopping it coming over
Soft-close ball-bearing slides, specified
Takes legal as well as letter
What they are not
35.43 in wide needs a 3 ft run of clear wall, which a small room may not have
40 lb is light for a lateral, and the interlock is doing real work as a result
Only 15 units in stock at the time of writing
Assembly required
Skip this if
Skip this if you do not have 3 ft of free wall. A lateral's whole advantage is width; in a narrow space it becomes an obstruction and a vertical is the right shape.
Who it is for. Anyone with a wall and more than a couple of years of paper. This is the cabinet we would buy.

What the specs are good for
About 99 filing inches: more than three times a standard 2-drawer vertical, in roughly the same floor area as the 2-drawer lateral
About 1.82 dollars per inch, the best value on the whole site
Interlock across all three drawers
40 in high puts the top drawer at a comfortable standing height rather than a crouch
What they are not
56 lb across three drawers is LESS weight than the 2-drawer model's 67 lb, which is an odd combination on a taller cabinet and makes the interlock essential
40 in high means it will not fit under a desk
No drawer interior and no load rating published
Three loaded lateral drawers is well over 200 lb of paper on a 56 lb shell
Skip this if
Skip this if you cannot anchor it to a wall. A 40 in cabinet weighing 56 lb that can hold 200-plus lb of paper is top-heavy by construction, and Letaya does not supply an anti-tip kit.

What the specs are good for
About 66 filing inches, the most of any 2-drawer cabinet on the site
67 lb, the heaviest lateral here, which is what you want under an interlock
Full-suspension ball-bearing drawers specified
A folding key, which sounds trivial and is the difference between keeping it on a keyring and losing it
Publishes an assembly time estimate
What they are not
The listing states 36 in width in its dimension fields and 35 in in its feature text. A 1 in discrepancy on the dimension that defines its capacity
No drawer interior published
No published load rating
36 in wide and 16 in deep needs a 3 ft wall and 2.5 ft of pull-out space
Skip this if
Skip this if the exact width matters, for instance fitting a specific alcove. Letaya publishes two different widths for the same cabinet and we cannot tell you which is right.
Who it is for. A long wall and a lot of filing, where an inch either way does not matter.
110 lb per drawer published. Paper is heavy — roughly 1.5 lb per linear inch of files — so this is the number that tells you the slides will survive a full drawer
Two adjustable hanging rails per drawer, so you can file front-to-back as well as side-to-side
A genuine anti-tilt interlock on a 45 lb cabinet
About 2.00 dollars per filing inch
28 in wide fits a 30 in alcove, where the BIZOEIRON will not
What they are not
The "300 hanging folders" claim is implausible: 300 folders would be roughly 30 linear inches of tightly compressed paper weighing well over the drawer's own published 110 lb limit. We would ignore that number and trust the load rating
Does not publish a drawer interior, so our capacity figure is an estimate
No warranty stated
Assembly required
Skip this if
Skip this if you have the wall for the BIZOEIRON. That one publishes a measured interior and a soft-close action for the same price per inch; this one wins on the load rating and loses on everything that is actually verifiable.
Who it is for. A 30 in alcove and a lot of heavy paper.

What the specs are good for
Specifies SIDE-TO-SIDE rails, which is the orientation that uses a lateral's width. Several cabinets here leave the rail direction unstated and it changes the capacity completely
220 lb published maximum load
Full-extension steel ball-bearing slides
Base protective covers specified, which saves a wooden floor
About 2.00 dollars per filing inch
What they are not
Names legal, A4 and F4 but does not mention plain letter size, which is the most common US format and is presumably covered
43.65 lb carrying a stated 220 lb load, so the anti-tilt is load-bearing
No drawer interior published
No warranty stated
Skip this if
Skip this if you file letter size exclusively and want that confirmed in writing. The cabinet certainly takes it, but Greenvelly's own specification omits the format, and on this site we flag what a manufacturer does not say.

What the specs are good for
27.95 in high clears a standard desk apron, so this is the only lateral here that fits under a desk
Full-extension precision slides, an interlock and an anti-tilt mechanism all specified at 105 dollars
Takes letter, legal and A4, all three named
28.35 in wide fits a 30 in gap
What they are not
Says "four deep and spacious drawers" on a 2-drawer cabinet — the same copy error as its 3-drawer sibling
The listed 105 lb is clearly a packed weight, so the cabinet's own mass is unknown and that is the tipping number
No drawer interior published
Skip this if
Skip this if you want the cabinet to be a surface as well. At 27.95 in it is designed to tuck under a desk, which means the top is not usable for anything.
Who it is for. A desk with a free 30 in bay underneath and a couple of years of paper to put there.
01Measure the clear wall, including skirting, pipes and door architrave. Then subtract an inch.
02Check the rail direction if capacity is why you are buying lateral. Side-to-side rails use the width; front-to-back rails use the depth and give you a vertical cabinet in a wide box.
03Check the height against your desk if it is going underneath. Only one lateral here clears a standard apron.
04Plan for assembly. Every lateral here is flat-packed. Letaya publishes about 30 minutes; the rest do not say.
A cabinet wider than it is deep, in which hanging folders sit side to side on rails running the width of the drawer. That means capacity follows the cabinet's width, which is why a 35 in lateral drawer holds roughly double what an 18 in deep vertical drawer holds.
How much does a lateral file cabinet hold?+
A 28 in wide lateral holds about 25 linear filing inches per drawer and a 36 in holds about 33. A 3-drawer 36 in lateral gives about 99 inches in total, which is more than three times a standard 2-drawer vertical.
Do lateral file cabinets tip over?+
They are safer than tall verticals by geometry, and every lateral in our set publishes an interlock or anti-tilt mechanism precisely because a loaded drawer is heavy. A fully loaded 3-drawer lateral carries about 144 lb of paper on a 56 lb shell, so the interlock is doing real work.
Can a lateral file cabinet fit under a desk?+
Only the short ones. Standard desk apron clearance is about 29 in, and most laterals here are 28.4 to 29 in tall before you account for carpet. The Letaya compact at 27.95 in is the one designed for it.
Lateral or vertical for a home office?+
Lateral if you have about 3 ft of free wall: more inches per drawer, generally lower cost per inch, and better anti-tip design. Vertical if you only have a narrow gap. Both take about the same floor depth once the drawer is open, which surprises people.

Our arithmetic: the 3 in shell allowance for filing capacity
Only one cabinet in our set publishes a drawer interior — the BIZOEIRON lateral, at 32.44 in interior inside a 35.43 in exterior, a 2.99 in difference. We round that to 3 in and apply it to every other cabinet's published external figure. It is derived from one lateral cabinet, so applying it to verticals is an assumption and we label it as one every time.
Our arithmetic: the weight of office paper
A standard letter-size banker's box holds about 2,500 sheets; 2,500 sheets of 20 lb bond weighs about 25 lb, so a full box is roughly 30 lb including the box. That works out at about 1.5 lb per linear inch of upright files. Every shelf-load and cabinet-load comparison on this site uses those figures and shows the sum.
