Five formats, and the one that fits your room is usually decided before you start thinking about brands.

The short answer
Lateral if you have about 3 ft of free wall, vertical if you only have a narrow gap, mobile if it has to live under a desk, and a certified fire box alongside whichever one you pick. Those four cover almost every home office. The fifth format, the open rolling cart, is for live project files you touch weekly and nothing confidential.
The five formats
Vertical
Deeper than it is wide, typically 14 to 16 in wide and 18 to 26.5 in deep. Folders hang across the narrow drawer width and you file front to back, so capacity follows the cabinet's depth.
For: a narrow gap beside a desk, between a door and a window, in an alcove. Most 2-drawer verticals are 24 to 25 in tall and clear a standard desk apron. Against: roughly half the filing inches per drawer of a lateral, and almost none publish an interlock. Full ranking on best vertical file cabinets.
Lateral
Wider than it is deep, typically 28 to 36 in wide and 16 in deep. Folders hang side to side on rails running the width, so capacity follows the width.
For: capacity. A 36 in lateral drawer holds about 33 linear filing inches against an 18 in vertical drawer's 15. Every lateral we examined publishes an interlock, and most take letter, legal and A4. Against: it needs a run of wall, and only one in our set is short enough to go under a desk. Full ranking on best lateral file cabinets.
Mobile pedestal
A short cabinet on casters, sized to live under a desk at 24 to 28 in tall. Usually two shallow box drawers over one deep file drawer.
For: current work rather than an archive, and rooms where the cabinet has to tuck away. Against: capacity. A pedestal typically gives 12 to 29 linear filing inches, and several never confirm that any drawer takes a hanging folder at all. Full ranking on best mobile file cabinets.
Open rolling cart
An open bay with a removable hanging rod, usually with a shelf underneath. Around 39 dollars.
For: live project files you touch weekly, where no drawer is a feature rather than a compromise. Against: no lid, no lock, no privacy, and the published load is usually around 60 lb, which is about 40 inches of paper - the limit arrives before the bay is full.
Certified fire box
A 14 to 17 in cube with a lid, UL Classified for fire and ETL Verified for water, holding letter-size hanging folders. About 100 dollars.
For: documents whose originals matter. Against: about 8.62 dollars per linear filing inch against a cabinet's 2.00, so it is a four-times premium you pay deliberately for a small number of papers. Full comparison on fireproof file cabinet vs safe.

Yes, and that is the point
From the published specifications in our product set. Interestingly, the only cabinets that ship an anti-tip kit are the wood ones, which is the opposite of what you would expect from the material alone.
How to choose, in four questions
01How much paper do you have, in inches? Stand your files upright and measure the run. Under 15 inches is a cart or a pedestal; 15 to 50 is a 2-drawer; over 50 is a 3-drawer lateral.
02Do you have 28 in of clear wall? Yes means lateral, which is more capacity for the same floor depth. No means vertical.
03Does it need to go under a desk? Yes means a mobile pedestal or a short vertical, under about 27 in tall.
04Is any of it irreplaceable? Then a certified fire box alongside, whatever else you buy. It is a different product for a different threat.

What the specs are good for
Publishes the drawer interior. It is the only cabinet here whose capacity we did not have to estimate, and that alone earns it the top spot
64.88 measured filing inches from two drawers, more than double the 2-drawer verticals
A true interlock: only one drawer opens at a time, which on a 40 lb cabinet is the thing stopping it coming over
Soft-close ball-bearing slides, specified
Takes legal as well as letter
What they are not
35.43 in wide needs a 3 ft run of clear wall, which a small room may not have
40 lb is light for a lateral, and the interlock is doing real work as a result
Only 15 units in stock at the time of writing
Assembly required
Skip this if
Skip this if you do not have 3 ft of free wall. A lateral's whole advantage is width; in a narrow space it becomes an obstruction and a vertical is the right shape.
Who it is for. Anyone with a wall and more than a couple of years of paper. This is the cabinet we would buy.
Three drawers on ball-bearing glides in a 26.8 in high cabinet, at about 2.24 dollars per filing inch. The cheapest real capacity in this hub.

What the specs are good for
About 2.25 dollars per filing inch: the best value per inch of any vertical cabinet here and competitive with the laterals
Fifty percent more capacity than the 2-drawer model for 9 dollars more, which is the clearest upgrade decision in this hub
Ball-bearing glides specified on all three drawers, not just the file drawer
26.8 in high still clears a standard 29 in desk apron, so it fits under a desk
What they are not
Does not publish a weight, so you cannot judge tipping risk with the top drawer loaded and open
No interlock mentioned, and a 3-drawer vertical with two drawers out is a genuine tipping hazard
No warranty stated, unlike its 2-drawer sibling's 7 years
Skip this if
Skip this if it is going somewhere a child plays. A tall narrow cabinet with no interlock and no published weight is the configuration that tips, and Staples publishes neither the weight nor an anti-tip kit for this one.

What the specs are good for
BOTH drawers take hanging files, stated explicitly. Most mobile cabinets give you one file drawer and two box drawers and leave you to find out
About 1.87 dollars per filing inch, the best value of any mobile unit here
A center caster plus 55 lb of steel: the most stable budget roller in this set
Removable hanging bar, so a drawer becomes a plain drawer when you need one
Full-extension slides at 55 dollars
What they are not
The listing gives 26.1 in in its dimension fields and 27.5 in in its text, a 1.4 in discrepancy that matters if it has to go under a desk
No glide material stated, only the extension
No warranty
Skip this if
Skip this if it has to fit a tight desk clearance. With the published height disagreeing with itself by 1.4 in, measure your apron and allow the larger figure.
Who it is for. The default mobile filing cabinet for a home office: two real file drawers, locks, rolls, stays put.
A full fireproof filing cabinet - multi-drawer, fire-rated as an assembly - exists and costs 1,500 to 4,000 dollars at 500 to 800 lb. It is a commercial product, it is not sold through the channels this site covers, and for a household it is almost always the wrong purchase. A 100-dollar certified box plus a 130-dollar normal cabinet covers the same ground for a tenth of the money.
Five formats for a home office: vertical (narrow and deep), lateral (wide and shallow), mobile pedestal (short, on casters, for under a desk), open rolling cart (no drawers, for live files), and the certified fire box, which is a document safe rather than a cabinet.
Which type of filing cabinet holds the most?+
A 3-drawer lateral at 36 in wide, giving about 99 linear filing inches. That is more than three times a standard 2-drawer vertical, in roughly the same floor area once the drawers are open.
What is the difference between vertical and lateral filing cabinets?+
Vertical files front to back, so capacity follows the cabinet's depth. Lateral files side to side on rails, so capacity follows the width. A lateral holds roughly double per drawer and needs about 3 ft of wall; a vertical fits a 14 in gap.
Are wood or metal file cabinets better?+
Metal for capacity per dollar, longevity under load and water resistance. Wood-finish board for a room where the cabinet is visible. Oddly, the only cabinets in our set that ship an anti-tip kit are the wood ones.
How much paper do I actually have?+
Stand your files upright and measure the run in inches. That number is directly comparable to the linear filing inch figures we publish for every cabinet, and it is the only measurement that tells you what size to buy.

Our arithmetic: the 3 in shell allowance for filing capacity
Only one cabinet in our set publishes a drawer interior — the BIZOEIRON lateral, at 32.44 in interior inside a 35.43 in exterior, a 2.99 in difference. We round that to 3 in and apply it to every other cabinet's published external figure. It is derived from one lateral cabinet, so applying it to verticals is an assumption and we label it as one every time.
Our arithmetic: the weight of office paper
A standard letter-size banker's box holds about 2,500 sheets; 2,500 sheets of 20 lb bond weighs about 25 lb, so a full box is roughly 30 lb including the box. That works out at about 1.5 lb per linear inch of upright files. Every shelf-load and cabinet-load comparison on this site uses those figures and shows the sum.
UL Classification and ETL Verification, as cited by SentrySafe
SentrySafe publishes a UL Classification for fire endurance and an ETL Verification for water submersion, each with a stated duration. We quote their published durations and temperatures and have verified nothing ourselves.
