Fourteen inches wide, which is the whole appeal. Here is what that costs you in capacity, and where the value actually sits.

The short answer
Buy the Staples 3-drawer vertical. About 47.7 linear filing inches in a 14.3 in wide footprint at roughly 2.25 dollars an inch, on precision ball-bearing glides, with a keyed lock. It gives 50 per cent more capacity than the 2-drawer Staples for 9 dollars more, which is the clearest upgrade decision anywhere in this hub. If the budget is tighter, the SISESOL narrow vertical at about 1.34 dollars an inch is the cheapest real capacity on the whole site and comes with 51 lb of steel and a published 120 lb top load.
Why this is the easiest category to rank
Of every keyword we looked at in this niche, "vertical file cabinet" has the lowest competition score against five-figure monthly search volume. Reading the results shows why: the first page is almost entirely office-furniture retailers selling their own stock, with no independent publisher comparing anything.
That matters to you rather than to us, because it means the ranking you are reading does not exist elsewhere. Nobody publishes the capacity arithmetic. Nobody compares the cost per inch. The retailers list a drawer count and a price, and leave you to guess.
How we compute linear filing inches
Vertical cabinet - folders hang across the narrow drawer width and file front-to-back, so capacity follows the cabinet's DEPTH.
Lateral cabinet - folders hang side-to-side on rails, so capacity follows the cabinet's WIDTH.
Usable dimension = published external dimension - 3 in shell and hardware allowance
Linear filing inches = usable dimension x number of file drawers
Cost per inch = live price / linear filing inches
The 3 in allowance is DERIVED, not assumed: the BIZOEIRON lateral is the only cabinet in our set that publishes a drawer interior, at 32.44 in inside a 35.43 in exterior, a 2.99 in difference. No vertical cabinet anywhere publishes a drawer interior, so applying the same figure to verticals is an assumption and we label it as one every time it appears.
What vertical actually means
In a vertical cabinet, hanging folders sit across the narrow drawer width and you file front to back. Capacity therefore follows the cabinet's depth, not its width or its height. A 14 in wide cabinet at 18 in deep and a 15 in wide cabinet at 18 in deep hold the same amount of paper.
Height adds drawers rather than capacity per drawer. A 3-drawer vertical at 26.8 in is not a bigger drawer than a 2-drawer at 24.1 in; it is the same drawer three times.

Our arithmetic using the 3 in shell allowance. No vertical cabinet publishes a drawer interior, so every figure in this table is an estimate and we label it as one.
The floor space nobody counts
A vertical cabinet's published depth is not its footprint in use. An 18 in deep cabinet with the drawer fully extended occupies about 32 in of floor depth, and you need to stand in front of that. A 26.5 in deep cabinet needs over 4 ft.
In a spare bedroom that is often the walkway. The Staples 26.5 in deep model gives excellent capacity from two drawers and is the easiest cabinet here to regret, because the depth is invisible on the listing and obvious the moment it arrives.
Tipping, and why it matters more here
A vertical cabinet is tall and narrow, which is the geometry that tips. Paper weighs roughly 1.5 lb per linear inch, so a loaded 16 in drawer is about 24 lb hanging a foot and a half in front of a cabinet that may weigh 21 lb empty.
Only two cabinets here ship an anti-tip kit, both of them the wood 3-drawer models from VASAGLE and VINGLI. None of the steel verticals publishes an interlock. The practical advice is simple: put a 3-drawer vertical against a wall and anchor it, especially if children use the room.

What the specs are good for
About 2.25 dollars per filing inch: the best value per inch of any vertical cabinet here and competitive with the laterals
Fifty percent more capacity than the 2-drawer model for 9 dollars more, which is the clearest upgrade decision in this hub
Ball-bearing glides specified on all three drawers, not just the file drawer
26.8 in high still clears a standard 29 in desk apron, so it fits under a desk
What they are not
Does not publish a weight, so you cannot judge tipping risk with the top drawer loaded and open
No interlock mentioned, and a 3-drawer vertical with two drawers out is a genuine tipping hazard
No warranty stated, unlike its 2-drawer sibling's 7 years
Skip this if
Skip this if it is going somewhere a child plays. A tall narrow cabinet with no interlock and no published weight is the configuration that tips, and Staples publishes neither the weight nor an anti-tip kit for this one.

What the specs are good for
About 1.34 dollars per filing inch, by far the cheapest capacity anywhere in this hub
Publishes a 120 lb top load, so you know whether a printer can sit on it. Hardly anyone publishes this
51 lb of steel in a 40-dollar cabinet: nearly double the weight of the Staples letter cabinet at less than half the price
Takes legal AND A4 as well as letter, and names all three
Names the actual coating process rather than saying powder-coated
What they are not
No interlock and no anti-tip hardware mentioned
No warranty stated
"Deep and silent" is the only description of the drawer action; no glide type is named
Assembly required, with the instructions on a product page video rather than in the box
Skip this if
Skip this if the drawer action matters to you. SISESOL publishes the shell, the coating and the load but says nothing about what the drawers run on, and at this price they are unlikely to be ball-bearing full-extension.

What the specs are good for
Full-extension ball-bearing slides, specified. That is the difference between reaching the back file and not, and only this and the lateral cabinets publish it

Card holders on the drawer fronts: a small thing that actually makes a two-drawer cabinet usable
About 2.21 dollars per filing inch, good value

25.2 lb, the second-lightest cabinet here, and full-extension slides make a loaded open drawer a longer lever
No interlock despite the single lock

What the specs are good for
A 7-year manufacturer warranty, which is seven times longer than anything else in this hub publishes and the single strongest quality signal available here
14 in wide is the narrowest letter-size footprint in this set, so it fits beside a desk where a lateral will not
Published dimensions that are internally consistent, which sounds like a low bar and is not
28.6 lb: light enough to move alone, heavy enough not to tip when a loaded drawer is out
What they are not
About 3.30 dollars per linear filing inch, roughly 60 percent more than the lateral cabinets further down
Assembly required, where the deeper Staples model arrives built
No interlock, so two open drawers at once is possible and a loaded cabinet can tip
Skip this if
Skip this if you have more than about 30 inches of paper. Two vertical drawers fill faster than people expect, and the 3-drawer Staples below costs 9 dollars more for 18 more inches.

What the specs are good for
Three separately locking drawers, which is the right design if the cabinet is shared and only one drawer is yours
An anti-tip kit actually included, on a 40.6 in cabinet. It is the only tall cabinet here that ships one
Adjustable rails in all three drawers, so each can be set for A4 or letter independently
All three are file drawers, not two files and a stationery tray
What they are not
Three separate locks means three keys to keep track of
Particleboard at 40.6 in tall carrying three drawers of paper is the construction most likely to sag at the drawer bottoms over years
About 2.62 dollars per filing inch, mid-pack
Does not take legal size

What the specs are good for
Fully assembled, which is the only cabinet in this hub that is and worth real money if you dislike flat-pack
Two deep drawers give the same capacity as three shallow ones, so there is less bending and fewer drawers to search
53 lb is the most stable vertical here by weight
A 26.5 in drawer takes a whole year of filing in one pull
What they are not
About 4.04 dollars per filing inch, the worst value in this hub
26.5 in deep projects nearly a foot further into the room than a standard vertical, and the drawer needs that again to open
Putty finish only, which dates it
Skip this if
Skip this if floor space is tight. A 26.5 in cabinet plus a 23 in drawer pull needs over 4 ft of clear floor in front of it, and in a spare bedroom that is usually the whole walkway.

What the specs are good for
Fully welded steel rather than bolted panels, which is a structurally different and better cabinet
Pre-assembled, which with a welded frame is the only way it could arrive
Three full letter-size file drawers at 21.72 in depth, the deepest vertical drawers here
Smooth glide suspension on all three
What they are not
3/4 extension means the back quarter of a 21.72 in drawer is awkward to reach, which is why our capacity figure is lower than the raw depth suggests
The lock covers the top two drawers only; the bottom drawer is open
The listed 28.6 lb is implausible for a welded steel 3-drawer cabinet and is likely a data error, so we cannot judge stability
About 3.45 dollars per filing inch, the second-worst value here
Skip this if
Skip this if value per inch matters. You are paying a premium for welded construction and 3/4 extension gives some of the capacity back. Buy it for the build, not the arithmetic.
Who it is for. Someone who has had a bolted flat-pack cabinet rack itself out of square and does not want to repeat it.
You have 3 ft of free wall. Then a lateral gives roughly double the inches per drawer for about the same floor depth in use, and generally at a lower cost per inch. See best lateral file cabinets and lateral vs vertical.
You need it under the desk. Most verticals here are 24 to 27 in tall, which clears a standard desk apron, but a 3-drawer at 40 in does not. Mobile file cabinets is the under-desk format.
You have under about 15 inches of paper. Then a cabinet is overkill and a rolling file cart or a desktop file box does the job for a quarter of the price. Under-desk storage covers the smaller formats.
FAQ
Questions people ask about this
How much does a vertical file cabinet hold?+
Capacity follows depth. An 18 in deep 2-drawer vertical holds about 30 linear filing inches, which is roughly 4,500 to 6,000 sheets. A 3-drawer at the same depth holds about 47.7 inches. Height adds drawers, not capacity per drawer.
How wide is a vertical file cabinet?+
Letter-size verticals are 14 to 16 in wide. That narrow footprint is the format's whole purpose: it fits a gap a lateral cannot. Legal-size verticals are wider, usually around 18 in.
How much floor space does a vertical file cabinet need?+
Its published depth plus the drawer extension plus somewhere to stand. An 18 in deep cabinet needs about 32 in of clear floor in use; a 26.5 in deep one needs over 4 ft. The depth is the spec people forget to check.
Will a vertical file cabinet tip over?+
It can, and the tall narrow ones are the geometry most at risk. A loaded 16 in drawer is about 24 lb cantilevered a foot and a half out from a cabinet that may weigh 21 lb empty. Put a 3-drawer vertical against a wall and anchor it, especially around children.
Do vertical file cabinets take legal size paper?+
Some do and most letter-size ones do not. Legal folders are 14 in deep against letter's 11, so the drawer has to be wider. Check the listing specifically; of the cabinets here only one Staples model names letter and legal together.

Our arithmetic: the 3 in shell allowance for filing capacity
Only one cabinet in our set publishes a drawer interior — the BIZOEIRON lateral, at 32.44 in interior inside a 35.43 in exterior, a 2.99 in difference. We round that to 3 in and apply it to every other cabinet's published external figure. It is derived from one lateral cabinet, so applying it to verticals is an assumption and we label it as one every time.
Our arithmetic: the weight of office paper
A standard letter-size banker's box holds about 2,500 sheets; 2,500 sheets of 20 lb bond weighs about 25 lb, so a full box is roughly 30 lb including the box. That works out at about 1.5 lb per linear inch of upright files. Every shelf-load and cabinet-load comparison on this site uses those figures and shows the sum.
