The default format, and the one where the vertical-versus-lateral choice makes the biggest difference to what you actually get.

The short answer
Two drawers can mean 25 inches of filing or 66, depending entirely on the format. That is the single most useful thing to know before buying one. A 2-drawer lateral at 36 in wide gives about 66 linear inches; a 2-drawer wood vertical gives about 25.6. Both are sold as two-drawer file cabinets at similar prices. Buy the BIZOEIRON lateral if you have the wall, the SISESOL narrow vertical if you do not and the budget is tight.

Our arithmetic using the 3 in shell allowance described below. Cost per inch is against the live price at the time of writing; the buy buttons carry the current one.
How we compute linear filing inches
Vertical cabinet - folders hang across the narrow drawer width and file front-to-back, so capacity follows the cabinet's DEPTH.
Lateral cabinet - folders hang side-to-side on rails, so capacity follows the cabinet's WIDTH.
Usable dimension = published external dimension - 3 in shell and hardware allowance
Linear filing inches = usable dimension x number of file drawers
Cost per inch = live price / linear filing inches
The 3 in allowance is DERIVED, not assumed: the BIZOEIRON lateral is the only cabinet in our set that publishes a drawer interior, at 32.44 in inside a 35.43 in exterior, a 2.99 in difference. No vertical cabinet anywhere publishes a drawer interior, so applying the same figure to verticals is an assumption and we label it as one every time it appears.
When two drawers is the right number
Most households generate less paper than they think. Two drawers of lateral filing, at about 50 to 66 inches, is roughly 8,000 to 10,000 sheets, which for a normal household is years of tax returns, insurance, medical records, warranties and property papers with room left over.
Two drawers is also the format that fits. At 24 to 29 in tall it clears a desk apron, gives you a usable surface on top, and does not need anchoring the way a 40 in cabinet does.
Where two drawers is wrong: if you are archiving a business, keeping seven years of client files, or already have banker's boxes you want to empty. Then 3-drawer cabinets or an office storage cabinet is the right scale, and buying two-drawer twice is worse value than buying three-drawer once.
What to check
Format first. Lateral if you have 3 ft of wall. The capacity difference is larger than any other decision on this page.
Interlock. Every lateral here publishes one. Most verticals do not, and a 2-drawer vertical is short enough that it matters less, but it still matters.
Drawer extension. Full extension means you reach the back file. On a vertical, where capacity follows depth, that is the difference between using the whole drawer and using most of it.
Paper size. The laterals here mostly take letter, legal and A4. The verticals are mostly letter only.
Top load, if a printer is going on it.

What the specs are good for
Publishes the drawer interior. It is the only cabinet here whose capacity we did not have to estimate, and that alone earns it the top spot
64.88 measured filing inches from two drawers, more than double the 2-drawer verticals
A true interlock: only one drawer opens at a time, which on a 40 lb cabinet is the thing stopping it coming over
Soft-close ball-bearing slides, specified
Takes legal as well as letter
What they are not
35.43 in wide needs a 3 ft run of clear wall, which a small room may not have
40 lb is light for a lateral, and the interlock is doing real work as a result
Only 15 units in stock at the time of writing
Assembly required
Skip this if
Skip this if you do not have 3 ft of free wall. A lateral's whole advantage is width; in a narrow space it becomes an obstruction and a vertical is the right shape.

What the specs are good for
About 66 filing inches, the most of any 2-drawer cabinet on the site
67 lb, the heaviest lateral here, which is what you want under an interlock
Full-suspension ball-bearing drawers specified
A folding key, which sounds trivial and is the difference between keeping it on a keyring and losing it
Publishes an assembly time estimate
What they are not
The listing states 36 in width in its dimension fields and 35 in in its feature text. A 1 in discrepancy on the dimension that defines its capacity
No drawer interior published
No published load rating
36 in wide and 16 in deep needs a 3 ft wall and 2.5 ft of pull-out space
Skip this if
Skip this if the exact width matters, for instance fitting a specific alcove. Letaya publishes two different widths for the same cabinet and we cannot tell you which is right.
Who it is for. A long wall and a lot of filing, where an inch either way does not matter.
110 lb per drawer published. Paper is heavy — roughly 1.5 lb per linear inch of files — so this is the number that tells you the slides will survive a full drawer
Two adjustable hanging rails per drawer, so you can file front-to-back as well as side-to-side
A genuine anti-tilt interlock on a 45 lb cabinet
About 2.00 dollars per filing inch
28 in wide fits a 30 in alcove, where the BIZOEIRON will not
What they are not
The "300 hanging folders" claim is implausible: 300 folders would be roughly 30 linear inches of tightly compressed paper weighing well over the drawer's own published 110 lb limit. We would ignore that number and trust the load rating
Does not publish a drawer interior, so our capacity figure is an estimate
No warranty stated
Assembly required
Skip this if
Skip this if you have the wall for the BIZOEIRON. That one publishes a measured interior and a soft-close action for the same price per inch; this one wins on the load rating and loses on everything that is actually verifiable.

What the specs are good for
Specifies SIDE-TO-SIDE rails, which is the orientation that uses a lateral's width. Several cabinets here leave the rail direction unstated and it changes the capacity completely
220 lb published maximum load
Full-extension steel ball-bearing slides
Base protective covers specified, which saves a wooden floor
About 2.00 dollars per filing inch
What they are not
Names legal, A4 and F4 but does not mention plain letter size, which is the most common US format and is presumably covered
43.65 lb carrying a stated 220 lb load, so the anti-tilt is load-bearing
No drawer interior published
No warranty stated
Skip this if
Skip this if you file letter size exclusively and want that confirmed in writing. The cabinet certainly takes it, but Greenvelly's own specification omits the format, and on this site we flag what a manufacturer does not say.

What the specs are good for
27.95 in high clears a standard desk apron, so this is the only lateral here that fits under a desk
Full-extension precision slides, an interlock and an anti-tilt mechanism all specified at 105 dollars
Takes letter, legal and A4, all three named
28.35 in wide fits a 30 in gap
What they are not
Says "four deep and spacious drawers" on a 2-drawer cabinet — the same copy error as its 3-drawer sibling
The listed 105 lb is clearly a packed weight, so the cabinet's own mass is unknown and that is the tipping number
No drawer interior published
Skip this if
Skip this if you want the cabinet to be a surface as well. At 27.95 in it is designed to tuck under a desk, which means the top is not usable for anything.

What the specs are good for
About 1.34 dollars per filing inch, by far the cheapest capacity anywhere in this hub
Publishes a 120 lb top load, so you know whether a printer can sit on it. Hardly anyone publishes this
51 lb of steel in a 40-dollar cabinet: nearly double the weight of the Staples letter cabinet at less than half the price
Takes legal AND A4 as well as letter, and names all three
Names the actual coating process rather than saying powder-coated
What they are not
No interlock and no anti-tip hardware mentioned
No warranty stated
"Deep and silent" is the only description of the drawer action; no glide type is named
Assembly required, with the instructions on a product page video rather than in the box
Skip this if
Skip this if the drawer action matters to you. SISESOL publishes the shell, the coating and the load but says nothing about what the drawers run on, and at this price they are unlikely to be ball-bearing full-extension.

What the specs are good for
A 7-year manufacturer warranty, which is seven times longer than anything else in this hub publishes and the single strongest quality signal available here
14 in wide is the narrowest letter-size footprint in this set, so it fits beside a desk where a lateral will not
Published dimensions that are internally consistent, which sounds like a low bar and is not
28.6 lb: light enough to move alone, heavy enough not to tip when a loaded drawer is out
What they are not
About 3.30 dollars per linear filing inch, roughly 60 percent more than the lateral cabinets further down
Assembly required, where the deeper Staples model arrives built
No interlock, so two open drawers at once is possible and a loaded cabinet can tip
Skip this if
Skip this if you have more than about 30 inches of paper. Two vertical drawers fill faster than people expect, and the 3-drawer Staples below costs 9 dollars more for 18 more inches.

What the specs are good for
Fully assembled, which is the only cabinet in this hub that is and worth real money if you dislike flat-pack
Two deep drawers give the same capacity as three shallow ones, so there is less bending and fewer drawers to search
53 lb is the most stable vertical here by weight
A 26.5 in drawer takes a whole year of filing in one pull
What they are not
About 4.04 dollars per filing inch, the worst value in this hub
26.5 in deep projects nearly a foot further into the room than a standard vertical, and the drawer needs that again to open
Putty finish only, which dates it
Skip this if
Skip this if floor space is tight. A 26.5 in cabinet plus a 23 in drawer pull needs over 4 ft of clear floor in front of it, and in a spare bedroom that is usually the whole walkway.
Who it is for. Someone who will not assemble furniture, has the floor depth, and wants it delivered working.
If the format decision is still open, lateral vs vertical settles it with the floor-space arithmetic. If two drawers feels like it might not be enough, 3-drawer cabinets has the step up and it is usually better value per inch. And if the cabinet needs to roll, mobile file cabinets is the format for under a desk.
FAQ
Questions people ask about this
How much does a 2-drawer file cabinet hold?+
Between about 25 and 66 linear filing inches depending entirely on the format. A 2-drawer lateral at 36 in wide gives about 66; a 2-drawer wood vertical at 15.8 in deep gives about 25.6. Both are sold as two-drawer file cabinets.
Is a 2-drawer file cabinet enough for a household?+
For most, yes. Fifty to sixty-six inches of lateral filing is roughly 8,000 to 10,000 sheets, which covers years of tax, insurance, medical, warranty and property paperwork with room spare. If you are archiving a business, go to three drawers.
How tall is a 2-drawer file cabinet?+
Verticals are 24 to 28.4 in, laterals 27.95 to 29 in. Most clear a standard 29 in desk apron, which means they fit under a desk and give you a surface on top when they do not.
Can I put a printer on a 2-drawer file cabinet?+
Usually, but check the published top load. SISESOL publishes 120 lb and DEVAISE publishes 66 lb; most publish nothing. A heavy laser printer on an unrated particleboard top is how you find out the hard way.
Should I buy two 2-drawer cabinets or one 3-drawer?+
One 3-drawer, almost always. It is cheaper per inch, takes less floor area, and gives you one lock rather than two. Two separate cabinets only win if they need to be in different rooms.

Our arithmetic: the 3 in shell allowance for filing capacity
Only one cabinet in our set publishes a drawer interior — the BIZOEIRON lateral, at 32.44 in interior inside a 35.43 in exterior, a 2.99 in difference. We round that to 3 in and apply it to every other cabinet's published external figure. It is derived from one lateral cabinet, so applying it to verticals is an assumption and we label it as one every time.
Our arithmetic: the weight of office paper
A standard letter-size banker's box holds about 2,500 sheets; 2,500 sheets of 20 lb bond weighs about 25 lb, so a full box is roughly 30 lb including the box. That works out at about 1.5 lb per linear inch of upright files. Every shelf-load and cabinet-load comparison on this site uses those figures and shows the sum.
