The space under a desk is the cheapest storage you own and the least measured. Here is what actually fits in it.

The short answer
Spend 11 dollars on the Bostitch Konnect under-desk drawers first, whatever else you do. Two self-adhesive slide-out drawers with four dividers, mounted to the underside of the desktop, costing zero desk surface and zero floor. It is the best value on this entire site. If you need real volume, the Aokitsink 4-drawer cart publishes a 150 lb load and per-drawer dimensions, which makes it the only cart here where you know what you are getting.
Measure the space before you buy anything
Under-desk storage fails for one reason more than any other: the thing does not fit. Three measurements, and they take two minutes.
01Apron clearance. Floor to the underside of the desk or its frame rail. A standard desk is about 29 in to the top, which usually leaves 25 to 27 in of clear height. Carpet takes some of that.
02Clear width between the legs, not the full desk width. On a desk with a cross-brace, measure to the brace.
03Knee depth. How far back you can put something before your legs hit it. This is usually 14 to 18 in, and it is the measurement people skip.
Will it fit under a standard desk?

The two formats, and which to buy
Mounted drawers, 11 to 20 dollars
A shallow tray that adheres or screws to the underside of the desktop and slides out. About 2 in deep, so it holds stationery and nothing with a spine.
The case for them is overwhelming at the price. They cost no desk surface, no floor and no knee room, and they solve the specific problem of pens, cables, sticky notes and charger ends living on the desk because there is nowhere else.
The catch is mounting. Neither product here publishes a load rating, and adhesive under a desk is exactly where you would want one. The TooCust supplies screws as well as adhesive, which is the honest way to mount a drawer you intend to put weight in. If your desk underside is textured or has a visible frame, neither will stick.
Rolling carts and cabinets, 40 to 105 dollars
Real volume, on casters, rolling out when you need it. The decision inside this format is whether you need hanging files or just drawers.
For files, the SISESOL rolling cabinet states both drawers take letter, legal and A4 and publishes a 200 lb load, which no other cart here does. It is really a filing cabinet that rolls, and it appears in best mobile file cabinets for that reason.
For everything else, the Aokitsink publishes a 150 lb capacity and 12 by 16.5 by 4.25 in per drawer, which is the only cart in this set where you can check what fits before it arrives.
What actually goes under a desk
Worth being honest about, because the space is smaller than it looks once your legs are in it.
A cart or small cabinet on one side, roughly 15 by 18 in, leaving the other two-thirds for your legs. That is the normal and correct use of the space.
Mounted drawers on the underside, which take no space at all and should be in every desk.
A power strip and cable management, mounted to the underside rather than lying on the floor where a vacuum will find it.
Not: a printer. Printers need a surface at a usable height, which is what a 2-drawer file cabinet with a published top load gives you.
Not: an archive. Boxes under a desk are where paperwork goes to be forgotten, and they make the space unusable. That is what office storage cabinets are for.
How we ranked these
Five metrics, each 0 to 10: capacity (usable volume), loadRating (published weight capacity, per shelf and total), footprint (floor or desk area consumed), build (material and construction as published) and documentation. Full rubric on how we pick.

What the specs are good for
A 150 lb published load, which is 100 boxes-worth of certainty the other carts here do not give you
Publishes per-drawer dimensions at 12 x 16.5 x 4.25 in, so you can check what fits
4.25 in drawer depth, more than double the under-desk adhesive drawers
Drawer stops, so a pulled drawer does not come out onto the floor
14 lb carrying 150 lb is a genuinely good frame-to-load ratio
What they are not
Does not say whether any drawer takes hanging files, so as a filing product it is unconfirmed
Mesh drawers: dust and small items
Only two of the casters lock
26.6 in is 0.2 in taller than the SWTYMIKI, which is irrelevant until your desk apron is exactly 26.5 in
Skip this if
Skip this if you specifically need hanging files. Aokitsink publishes the load and the drawer size and says nothing about file rails, and a 4.25 in drawer will not hang folders upright anyway.

What the specs are good for
Eleven dollars for two drawers, which is the best value on the site by a distance
Four removable dividers across two drawers, so pens, cables and sticky notes each get a compartment
Mounts entirely under the desktop, so it costs zero desk surface and zero floor
Bostitch is an actual office-products brand with a product line behind it
What they are not
No published load rating, and adhesive mounting under a desk is exactly where you want one
1.91 in deep: this holds stationery, not notebooks or anything with a spine
Self-adhesive only, no screw option, so removal will take finish with it
Needs a smooth flat underside, which a desk with a frame rail or a cable tray may not have
Skip this if
Skip this if your desk underside is textured, has a visible frame, or is anything other than a flat smooth panel. Adhesive drawers come off, and they come off full.
Who it is for. Every desk. This is the first eleven dollars we would spend on a cluttered one.

What the specs are good for
Screws supplied as well as adhesive, which is the only honest way to mount a drawer you will put weight in
A built-in stopper, so a fully-opened drawer does not land on your knees
Publishes both drawer sizes individually, so you know what fits where
TooCust prints the real instruction — clean the surface and wait 24 hours before loading — which most adhesive products do not
What they are not
No published load rating
2 in deep, same stationery-only limitation as the Bostitch
Clear plastic means the contents are on display, which defeats the point for some people
Drilling into a desktop is permanent and voids most desk warranties
Skip this if
Skip this if you will not drill. On adhesive alone it is no better mounted than the Bostitch two-pack and costs nearly twice as much; the screws are the reason to choose it.
Who it is for. A desk you own outright and are willing to drill, where the drawer needs to hold more than paper clips.

What the specs are good for
BOTH drawers take hanging files, stated explicitly. Most mobile cabinets give you one file drawer and two box drawers and leave you to find out
About 1.87 dollars per filing inch, the best value of any mobile unit here
A center caster plus 55 lb of steel: the most stable budget roller in this set
Removable hanging bar, so a drawer becomes a plain drawer when you need one
Full-extension slides at 55 dollars
What they are not
The listing gives 26.1 in in its dimension fields and 27.5 in in its text, a 1.4 in discrepancy that matters if it has to go under a desk
No glide material stated, only the extension
No warranty
Skip this if
Skip this if it has to fit a tight desk clearance. With the published height disagreeing with itself by 1.4 in, measure your apron and allow the larger figure.
Who it is for. The default mobile filing cabinet for a home office: two real file drawers, locks, rolls, stays put.
For the filing-specific version of this format, best mobile file cabinets ranks what actually takes hanging folders. For more ideas about the space itself, under-desk storage ideas goes through what fits and what does not. And if the real problem is that the desk surface is covered rather than the floor under it, best desk organizers is the right page.
FAQ
Questions people ask about this
How much space is under a standard desk?+
A 29 in high desk usually leaves 25 to 27 in of clear height, less on carpet. Knee depth is the measurement people forget: you can typically only put something 14 to 18 in back before your legs hit it, which is why most under-desk carts sit to one side.
Do adhesive under-desk drawers hold?+
On a smooth, clean, flat underside, yes, provided you clean the surface and wait 24 hours before loading, which TooCust prints in its own listing. On a textured underside or one with a visible frame rail, they will not. Neither product here publishes a load rating, so keep them to stationery.
What is the best under-desk storage for files?+
A rolling cabinet that states its drawers take hanging folders. The SISESOL here says both drawers take letter, legal and A4 and publishes a 200 lb load; most carts in this category never confirm a file drawer at all. Best mobile file cabinets covers the format in full.
Can I put a printer under my desk?+
You can fit one and you will regret it. A printer needs a surface at a usable height with clearance for paper trays and the lid. A 2-drawer file cabinet with a published top load gives you that at about 29 in.
How much weight can an under-desk cart hold?+
Where it is published, 150 to 200 lb, which is well above anything a home office puts in one. Four of the six products here publish nothing at all, which on a storage product is the specification going missing.

Our arithmetic: the weight of office paper
A standard letter-size banker's box holds about 2,500 sheets; 2,500 sheets of 20 lb bond weighs about 25 lb, so a full box is roughly 30 lb including the box. That works out at about 1.5 lb per linear inch of upright files. Every shelf-load and cabinet-load comparison on this site uses those figures and shows the sum.
